7 Obstacle Course Races That Will Seriously Test Your Fitness (1)

Here's my belief: the notion of straight-up running kind of sucks to most of us. Why spend money on running around on hot pavement when you could just... not? (To be fair, this study says an hour of running could actually extend your life) But if you want to get out and enjoy the outdoors while getting a serious workout in, it may be high time you look into signing up for an obstacle course race.

The appeal of obstacle course racing, to most, is that you hardly notice you're running, because you're more focused on dealing with intense, oftentimes military-inspired obstacles that will seriously challenge your mind and body.

Signing up for a race can be a great motivator to get to the gym for training so you don't completely die out on the course. Signing up will require you to train not only your running legs, but your entire body to prepare for conquering all of those obstacles. It's a great combination of strength training and cardio to help you lean out and get shredded, so why the hell not?

We've put together a list of the best obstacle course races you should seriously consider trying out this summer. From 24 hour races to bootcamp-inspired obstacles, just prepping for these races will definitely help whip you into shape.

GORUCK Challenge

The GORUCK Challenge is difficult. Seriously difficult. The challenges are based on Special Forces training, and feature three different challenges you can choose from—"light," "tough" and "heavy." The "light" option takes about five hours and covers anywhere from seven to 10 miles, and the "tough" and "heavy" options make that look like a leisure stroll through the park. Participants are required to carry a pack weighing either 20 or 30 pounds, depending on the individual's weight. Forget physical challenges—the GORUCK challenges are all about how far you can push yourself. The average finishing rate of people who opt for the "heavy" option is only 50 percent.
