It’s a novelty until some hack on Music Row thinks it’s a smart idea to throw a budget behind it – or one of them finds the right trap act on the come-up who’ll be mercenary enough for the virality.

Honestly, I kind of think that’s just a matter of time. Maybe it won’t be Katie Noel, but there are SO many like her if you scratch even below the surface.

That’s what the did with Ernest and Jelly Roll. The difference is these two artist were perceptive enough to see where the trends were going, which was more country-sounding songs, and better songwriting. Then you have someone like Breland who has absolutely no organic appeal, and they continue to pour money into that project.
This stuff has been around for over a decade and getting millions of hits on social media. But you drag it out into the light, and it gets exposed and withers. This song is a perfect example.

  Re: Breland. Just saw today where Jimmie Allen is leaving Nashville for Miami, where the country music scene is about as vibrant as New York City’s. Here’s a guy whose label has done a good job getting his songs on the radio and a great job of getting him on TV, but he must think the grass is greener on the pop side despite the horrific creative slump Top 40 (CHR) radio has been in for the past few years. I’d expect the Breland push to get even more intense now, and he has yet to record anything remotely as country as “Down Home,” a mildly entertaining bit of pop country, even if it does ask you to believe that Jimmie loves playing Charley Pride in his truck. I don’t hear one trace of country in Breland’s voice or any potential for him in the genre. If this hick-hop song catches on and becomes a trend (which, like you, I don’t believe will happen), Breland may have a shot and Jimmie will come running back.
  IMO, a lot depends on what Morgan Wallen’s new album sounds like. If most of the 36 tracks are like “Thought You Should Know” or “Don’t Think Jesus,” we’ll be OK. But the snap/trap tracks he’s leaked in advance of the drop date scare me a lot. Sure wish Combs had beaten him to the punch, because what I’ve heard of “Gettin’ Old” is pretty high quality for mainstream country, but instead we’re going to get three solid weeks of Mullet Boy hype. Fingers crossed that the resurgence isn’t going to be stopped in its tracks, whether Katie herself has a hit or not.

The list of incredible performers that have graced JL’s stage is vast including many on here we love but yes they sometimes have the lower echelons as well, gotta pay the bills. All I know is I’ll be there for Channing Wilson Friday and The Steel Woods in July. Maybe even pop in for Morgan Wade.     There’s a lot more to the North than that.
    My family is from upstate NY (Adirondacks) and much of that area had the same rural vibe of the South. Some differences, of course, due to geography, weather, and history, but it ain’t like NYC (or other metro areas).

This girl has over 400K monthly listeners on Spotify and one of her songs has over 39M streams. Compare that to say Kaitlyn Butts with barely 200K monthly’s and 3.9M of one song. How the hell? Somehow it continues to get worse as it goes along. Just when you think it can’t possibly get any more ludicrously, pathetically, absurd, it manages to find a whole new way to suck.

And if it weren’t for the music video, it would almost feel like a sincere, honest to God, bro, country song

But the music video is so laughably, redundant, comically, absurd, that it almost feels like the opening montage of a John Candy movie set in the deep South, while the credits slowly crawl

You could write a doctoral thesis about the unique subset of our culture that mocks education, of embarrassing millennials, who were probably raised by moderately inattentive, alcoholic parents, who proceeded to grow up to be exactly this sort of person who never seem to think that it was wrong, and took offense to everyone who thought that it was

The simple fact I’ve met people who honest to God live like this. It’s really weird because it seems like something out of some perverse fiction, but there are actual people to whom this appeals, to whom this resonates with because that’s their lifestyle. And they’re also bored suburbanites, who want anything different, and because almost every other direction in life is mostly sideways, down is the only way out of bored suburban ism.

I have interacted with this website, it’s community, and it’s contact for almost a decade now. People who have been around an active in the comments for the entirety of that time, probably know me as a serious nerd, invested in education, with a head full of trivia and analogies and information on a broad area of subjects. I also used to be a really condescending elitist jerk.

I don’t understand why people hate education, learning things is cool. Knowing things as cool. Understanding things it’s cool. And being an ignorant boob isn’t.

And the amount of people I’ve met, who have no desire to better than selves, who, for better, or for worse live like this music video, it’s hard for me not to look down on them because it’s so obviously a choice to be an ignorant illiterate person

That’s why the brew country era meeting me so angry. Because it was like everything that I hated in the world, the proudly ignorant, rising up to try and take over my entire world.

Bro, country era wasn’t just about bad music or what cells, it was an embarrassment of ignorance, illiteracy, small mindedness, a general disdain, for any in all forms of education, by the people who probably think John Adams made beer

So yes, in the post bro Era this feels like an anomaly that we could all laugh at. But when the bro Era was its strongest, It felt like that was the way the world was going, remember that awful TV show party down south? Where are the rednecks pissed on each other?

I will never understand, the backlash, the education, except that the people working in education make being educated and insufferable burden. I was never much of a great shakes is a student, admittedly, I would much rather have educated myself on my own topics of interest.

Top 40 culture, by which I mean people who only watch new movies listen to new music and don’t read very many books, and especially don’t read books on anything informational, I’ve got to be the shallowest, most tedious people on earth.

But I also think that a lot of bad, southern stereotypes have so permeated our culture, that an awful lot of people have just chosen to embrace them rather than deal with the embarrassment of it all. And that could be its own doctoral thesis.

This goes beyond just the outlier genres of country music. It includes Superhero movie nerd-dom, majority of rap music and black culture, social media influencer and reality TV culture.
Your Top 40 culture comment hits the nail on the head. I’m 36 and have frequently gotten odd looks when I say that my favorite movies are from the 1960’s.

Mass media entertainment is a cavalcade of stupidity and trash right now. It’s amazing the number of tatted up, barely literate “artists” we’re seeing across a variety of genres, and it’s sad how those aesthetics are infecting everything else. To a large extent it seems like metaphor, key changes, melody, nuanced emotional expression, and song structure have receded way into the background, replaced by literalism and looping chords and rigid percussion. It used to be normal for songs to have different melodies and changes from intro to verse to prechorus to chorus to bridge etc, and now we get a loop of 4 chords more often than not. The key change where you’d get IV – I – V7 – II, where the II chord changed key, was incredibly common. As one example. Or changes that would go major, major7, dom7, IV. Major to minor shifts. Or saving the V chord for the chorus. Or instrumental virtuosity. All increasingly gone. It’s sad. Music like the linked video reeks of stupidity and laziness all around, and it’s insulting to the listener. If saying that is judgmental or elitist, cool. Because I’d rather be judgmental and elitist than to be so easily pleased as to accept that sad excuse for music.

The South has pride. Unlike Yankeeland. And I am from Pennsylvania. Then again, there isn’t much to be proud of up North. Our tea isn’t sweet and we eat oatmeal instead of grits. And our women have to wear parkas to look good.

The only country rap I have every liked was Cowboy Troy, his album Black in the Saddle is one of the best rap albums I have ever heard, he mixes hard rock, pop, blues and country with rap and it works out great, I really don’t care for this other stuff. Cowboy Troy still does great music he even did a half rap half blues album, no rap in those songs, and he actually has a good singing voice, I know a lot of people don’t like rap mixed with country, fine, your taste, but just like any music, it can be good if you can find some one who can sing it. They will never be Charlie pride, or Johnny Cash, but if they can put variety in there music and write good songs, then I can enjoy it.

It’s pathetic and sad to see country people aping city people, language, and customs. But are there any actual country people left, and if so, are they making their own music? You have to get pretty far off the grid to find them. With TV and professional marketing, it was just a matter of time until the cultural purge came in America, and it came in waves. We’re just watching the latest waves drowning the remaining survivors.

In the end, King Honky is right. Country people are hard to find. Most of the people who style themselves country are suburbanites. They’re … obedient. I also know country hipsters, who are suburbanites trying to avoid being suburban mainly by making poor life choices. There are also plenty of stylists making country music, and sometimes you can find good ones. Enjoy them. We all do. Justify your consumption by telling yourself that everything comes from something else. Give yourself a good pat on the back.

But it’s not real, and everyone knows it. In fact, this “Katie Noel” is so derivative, it’s indistinguishable from the production of an AI engine. Country music is alive and well, but you won’t find it on the radio. And in Katie Noel, it’s dead.

If you’re in the country reading this, you’re going to have to create it yourself.

Are you saying that to be “real country people,” we have to live in the woods and be Jeremiah Johnson to be legitimate? I grew up suburban, with two white collar parents (who both grew up farming). I still find myself drawn to the authenticity and “realness” of what most would call “real country.”
Just because I grew and still live on the outskirts of a city does not mean I don’t find myself turning around to face the fields and woods on the other side of my property line.

  Fuel, I have no interest in defining “legitimate.” Country means rural. Good initial tests are whether you’re on city water/sewer, whether you and your friends pay farrier bills, and whether you believe bullsh*t on television.

    Does the average country person even own horses these days? I grew up in rural Texas, and even most of the ranchers/farmers I knew just used four wheelers to get around their land. Country folks that owned horses weren’t uncommon by any means, but they were certainly more the exception than the rule.

This “bro-country-rap” song, by a female artist peddling her schtick, has no similarity at all to Elvis Presley and his great cover version of Big Mama Thornton’s “Hound Dog.” To even make such a comparison is absurd. Elvis was a genuine lover of traditional country music, blues, gospel, and other great American musical forms. He grew up in the South listening closely to these forms of music, and buying the records and studying them as a serious fan. He also lived in largely black neighborhoods as a child, and even went to largely black churches as a white teenager in the South in the early ’50s, which was an act of cultural defiance in the environment of that time. He loved the people, and the style of worship and music, in those churches. With “Hound Dog,” Elvis didn’t “imitate” Big Mama Thornton– he covered a song that she (and another artist, too, which Elvis had actually heard before BMT’s version) had recorded first, written by two Jewish men, Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller. Elvis’ version of the song even doesn’t particularly sound much like BMT’s version. His “Hound Dog” is so different, musically, and lyrically, in some ways, from her version that it’s almost like a different song. He was a genuine artist who combined country music, blues, soul, crooner-style balladeering, and other styles into his recordings, and, along with Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, and others, helped to create the 1950s rock and roll sound. Elvis has nothing in common, artistically, with this “country-rapper,” Katie Noel.

I don’t know what everyone is so worked up about. This is not country, does not resemble country, and has nothing to do with country. The difference between this and so much other rap is that she uses English for the most part correctly.
Maybe we should be mad that mainstream country can call itself country. Or maybe we should bargain for Roger Alan Wade, Corb, and Tyler Childers to no longer be called country and instead be called something else entirety. That would fix the whole situation.

Hick Hop is like ICP in the 2000’s. It existed and was popular underground and none of your friends excitedly showed you their music because deep down (while they had the hatchet man hoodies and tattoos) they knew it was stupid music they should be embarrassed of that was essentially their audible barrier to never escape the lower middle class. Only the performers broke that barrier; like some sort of redneck pyramid scheme.

There are some of us who enjoy traditional country music as well as hick hop. However, I don’t consider hick hop to be country music. In my music collection, I have Colt Ford, Cowboy Troy, and The Jawga Boyz in the rap folder.

Guitar or ‘’traditional’’ singing are not more a major aspect of rap than French horn or Tuvan throat singing are of country. It’s called rap because they rap. Duh. You do not have to like a genre of music. Art is subjective. You should respect the true artist. There is bad hip hop just like there is bad country, rock, blues, etc. I am not a fan of rap, but a I do respect the artists that can create rhymes that are poetic, literary, elicit deep emotion, etc. I also respect artists that can create complex beats and samples. I am no fan of Tuvan throat singing, but I respect the hell out of it. You and Questlove should debate this topic. I am confident in knowing who would look the fool.

I would say neither of them were/are clowns. Denying Questlove’s major talent just shows your ignorance. The guy is a true renaissance man. Research him. Conway had a excellent singing voice and wrote some songs, in addition to crafting a marketable image with his pompadour, song choices and affect. Nothing wrong with that. I listened to a Honky Tonk Piano playlist today, and “Yellow Rose of Texas” came on. It struck me how many odes to women from Southern states there are, but I can’t think of the Northern equivalent of “Yellow Rose” or “Rosalee” in country music. There must be some songs.

By the way, Honky Tonk piano is excellent listening. We need more Honky Tonk piano in modern country music.
