  • The Ely Igloo Snowmobile Club was the first club to organize in the country in 1960. The Ely Igloos were one of the founding members of the International Snowmobile Association - ISA, then to become Minnesota United Snowmobile Association - MnUSA. Members of the club have developed trails in the Ely area, and each December numerous club members volunteer their time to clear the trails of trees and branches for the upcoming snowmobile season. An important mission the Ely Igloo Snowmobile Club has been involved with from the very beginning is the training of young snowmobile riders with a Snowmobile Safety Class each year. These classes teach boys and girls of at least 11 years of age about the proper etiquette of snowmobiling and the rules of the trail. In recent years, the Ely Igloo Snowmobile Club has taken on the task of grooming the Ely area trails. The club receives funding from the state to maintain and groom the Grant-in-Aid Tomahawk Trail. Other local trails the Bianchi Trail (off the Taconite Trail), the Ely/Winton Railroad Grade, and the 13 Corners Trail are also groomed by our club. In addition, our club has taken on the staking and grooming of numerous lake trails Shagawa Lake/Fall Lake Trail, Burntside Lake Trail, Bass Lake Trail, White Iron Lake/ Birch Lakes Trail, Little Long Lake Trail, Fall Lake/Cedar Lake Trail, Grassy Lake Trails, the Ely Igloo Trail to Lake Vermilion, and of course, the famous Chainsaw Sisters Trail. • We have been creating winter fun since 1966. Our goal is to enhance snowmobile recreation in the Lake Vermilion and Tower Area. Our club grooms 62 miles of trails, stakes 60 miles on Lake Vermilion, and has maintained, through the generous support of over 50 private landowners, the Iron Ore Trail between Tower and Embarrass. This is accomplished with three groomers, two stationed in Tower and one in Greenwood Township, and many hours of volunteer service. Our Club schedules family rides on many weekends throughout the riding season and celebrates a Christmas Party. Club meetings are held on the first Wednesday of each month, September through May. We do our part to make to make the northern Minnesota State Trail System what it is today- Thousands of miles of gorgeous, safe, and fun recreation for the whole family!
