England need to cut seven players from their initial 33-man squad ahead of Euro 2024 with Gareth Southgate already telling James Maddison he won't be on the plane to Germany
England's extended 33-man squad is beginning to be trimmed down with James Maddison the headline casualty thus far.
Gareth Southgate named an initial group of 33 players as he aimed to get a closer look at several individuals, some of whom have only just returned from injury. The Three Lions boss can only take 26 players to Euro 2024 and must submit his final squad to UEFA tomorrow night at 11pm.
England begin their tournament campaign against Serbia on June 16, but play one final friendly against Iceland tomorrow night before they head to Germany, aiming to finally end their wait for silverware.
Before they jet off several more players are set to receive disappointing news - with Liverpool pair Curtis Jones and Quansah understood to have been dropped from the group.

Fans make feelings clear
England fans have been left stunned by Gareth Southgate's decision to omit Jack Grealish from his 26-man squad for Euro 2024.
The Three Lions boss, 53, named a provisional squad consisting of 33 players last month ahead of tune-up matches against Bosnia & Herzegovina and Iceland knowing that he would have to cull seven players before England jet off to Germany.
And it now seems as though Grealish, James Maddison, Curtis Jones, James Trafford, Jarell Quansah, Jarrad Branthwaite and Harry Maguire are the unlucky few who will miss out.
But while in some instances, like Maguire, injuries have forced Southgate's hand, not all of his decisions have been well received on social media.

Maguire reacts to England axe
Harry Maguire has confirmed he has not made England's Euro 2024 squad in a heartfelt statement on social media.
The Manchester United defender wrote: "I am devastated not to have been selected to play for England at the Euros this summer.
"Despite my best efforts, I have not been able to overcome an injury to my calf. Maybe I pushed myself too hard, to try and make it. Simply, I am absolutely gutted.
"For me, representing England is the highest honour. It means everything to me. If I can’t help the team as a player, I will support them as a fan – along with the rest of the country. Go and win it boys.
"Next, I will return to the supervision of the Manchester United medical team in order to prepare for next season."

Southgate makes final decision
Gareth Southgate appears to have decided on his Euro 2024 squad, with Harry Maguire and Jack Grealish the big names to miss out on this summer's showpiece tournament.
The Three Lions manager needs to confirm his squad to UEFA by 11pm on Friday night, but he seems to have nailed down his decision on his final 26-man travelling party. He initially named a 33-man training squad for the friendlies with Bosnia and Iceland.
As well as Grealish and Maguire, James Maddison, Curtis Jones, Jarell Quansah, James Trafford and Jarrad Branthwaite are also expected to miss out.

Harry Maguire will not be going to the Euros with England.
A huge blow for Gareth Southgate.

BREAKING: Maguire and Grealish to miss out on Euros squad
Wow. This is massive.
Jack Grealish and Harry Maguire will not be part of the squad that goes to the Euros, according to The Athletic.
The Man City winger had struggled for form whilst Maguire, a stalwart under Gareth Southgate, won't beat an injury issue that will cost him his spot.

Trafford axed
James Trafford, the Burnley goalkeeper, has just been told he won't be part of England's Euros squad, reports The Sun.
He's the fourth man to be delivered the news after James Maddison, Curtis Jones and Jarrel Quansah.
It means the Dean Henderson, Jordan Pickford and Aaron Ramsdale are the three goalkeepers.

Trent's hope
The Liverpool star played in midfield on Monday and scored a stunner as England saw off Bosnia.
Gareth Southgate has been more than happy to use Trent Alexander-Arnold in a more advanced role, but wherever he plays he'll face stiff competition.
The England boss admits they haven't used the Red as much as they'd like, but he's in the conversation for a start.

One of Watkins or Toney?
There might not be enough room for the Aston Villa frontman and the Brentford star.
Ollie Watkins has just enjoyed the best season of his career whilst Ivan Toney was late to return after his gambling ban, but remains highly thought of.

Southgate on England 'unknowns'
He said recently: "We've never had so many unknown situations. We've had tournaments where we've taken a players where we know they will be back for a certain moment. We're used to dealing with it.
"I always like to give players as much clarity as possible. But on this occasion we're not able to do that."

Maddison curtailed by injury as Eze shone too bright
James Maddison's exclusion from England’s Euro 2024 party was sad but inevitable - just as Eberechi Eze making the cut now looks a formality.
For the first three months of the 2023-24 campaign, Maddison was not just the catalyst who made Tottenham tick: He was probably the best player in the Premier League, and streets ahead as signing of the season. Spurs were five points clear at the top in late October, and their midfield pied piper was king of Big Angeball.
So how did he miss the boat for the Euros? Simple - his injury during that chaotic 4-1 home defeat by Chelsea in November didn’t just take the wind from Tottenham’s sails. Maddison was never quite the same player when he came back.
And Eze, who put together a barnstorming sequence of performances in Crystal Palace’s surge towards a top-half finish, became an irresistible alternative.

Defenders culled
One think Gareth Southgate also has is a host of centre-half options... and he won't take them all.
The extended squad currently features Lewis Dunk, Marc Guehi, Ezri Konsa, Harry Maguire, John Stones, Joe Gomez and Jarrad Branthwaite.
They certainly won't all be on the plane - but each will think they have a case for being part of the final squad, especially if a spot opens up with Maguire facing an injury issue.

Maguire faces race against time with injury
Harry Maguire could yet miss the Euros as England sweat on the fitness of the centre-half.
The Man Utd defender was among three players who didn't train with the main squad on Thursday as he underwent an individual programme in an effort to get back to full fitness. He has been struggling with a muscle injury, which ruled him out of the recent FA Cup final.
Gareth Southgate had hoped he'd recover sufficiently to be part of the squad that jets out to Germany. The Telegraph though reports that sources close to the squad believe Maguire could miss out on the Euros as he continues to struggle with his injury.

Southgate maintained "everyone has a chance"
He said: "Everyone has a chance, there’s definitely some players we wanted to see. We were in a similar position in the last Euros, more time may allow us to make better decisions and a more balanced squad.
"Some injuries we don’t have all of the information. This has been as complicated a group as I can remember making. There are better decisions to make. Sometimes times doesn’t help you make a decision."

Bellingham yet to arrive at England camp
Jude Bellingham, fresh off the back of winning the Champions League with Real Madrid, is still not with the England squad.
According to reports the midfielder is absent but was given extra time off following the triumph at Wembley on Saturday night.
KEY EVENT
Three injuries confirmed
England have confirmed that 27 players will take part in today's training session.
Lewis Dunk, Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw will all take part in individual sessions as they look to get back to full fitness.
Samuel Meade
Who else misses out?
Certainly one goalkeeper.
Currently Jordan Pickford, Aaron Ramsdale, James Trafford and Dean Henderson are in camp.
The former two are certainties meaning that Trafford and Henderson are likely going to battle for the role of third-choice goalkeeper.
Samuel Meade
Did the Bosnia win gives us any clues?
Yes and no, the performance was far from great.
But Adam Wharton will have done his hopes the world of good and he could end up forcing his way in.
Cole Palmer's hopes of being a starter were also helped.

Shaw in a race against time
The left-back has barely featured for Man Utd and Gareth Southgate admitted it was touch and go with the clock against him.
"[Luke Shaw's] up against it. He's missed a lot of football," he said.
"The fact that he has been our first choice in that position, we've probably given him a lot longer than we would have done. I’ve talked with him and the medical team, we’ve been liaising with Manchester United, I'm not sure what's realistic at this time. I have to say, he's a long shot."

Southgate on adapting to injuries
When he announced the squad the Three Lions boss said: "The job is here to adapt to the situations you have and they are the cards you dealt with. The consequences you are dealt with. The injuries are a complex thing, they are not one of the things you spoke about, but they could be a lot of those things.
"Some have played a lot of football, some have come back earlier than they could’ve been. A lot of matches in the calendar. It’s too easy to say winter World Cup or this or that. There’s players with better injury records than others, training intensities. Everyone wants simple solutions, but it isn’t that."

Who were the big names to miss out?
Before the disappointment experienced by the likes of James Maddison, several players didn't even make the extended squad.
Some of those decisions were harsh - others more understandable.
Among those not selected were Marcus Rashford, Jordan Henderson, Reece James, Ben Chilwell, Dominic Solanke, Eric Dier, Jadon Sancho, Raheem Sterling and Ben White.

Mirror writers have their say..
No one wants to be part of the seven who miss out - but the same names keep cropping up.

The long-term plan with Quansah
Jarrel Quansah was always one included in the provisional squad as a player for the long term who might benefit from being around the camp.
England boss Gareth Southgate might have even painted that picture to a few of the younger players - stressing the importance of the whole experience.
Liverpool defender Quansah, 21, is expected to follow James Maddison and Curtis Jones in leaving the squad.
But Quansah is definitely one for the future because he has had such a good season for Liverpool.
No official confirmation yet but England do train at lunchtime so clues may be clearer then about who will be involved against Iceland on Friday night and who will make the final squad of 26.
Southgate has spoken to a few of the players individually so fully expecting more names to come out today even though the FA only have to submit the final squad to UEFA by Friday 11pm.

When's the deadline?
UEFA need the final Euro squads by 11pm on Friday.
It looks as if all the news will have filtered out of the England camp before that point, but that is the deadline Gareth Southgate has to work to.

Liverpool pair culled
Curtis Jones looks like he'll be another casualty in the England group.
Him being sent home is by no means unexpected.
His club team-mate Jarrel Quansah could also be culled. The young centre-half was bought into the group to gain experience and missing out is by no means a shock with Gareth Southgate likely taking a long term view.

Maddison sent home
James Maddison went to the World Cup, albeit he didn't play in Qatar.
He's enjoyed a strong debut year with Tottenham but, with so much attacking talent, he's been overlooked.
