Dating back to the 19th century, the Manhattan co*cktail is one of the most well-known, classic co*cktails of all time. There are a few different stories behind how the Manhattan co*cktail first originated, but I think it’s safe to say it is one of the five borough co*cktails that came out of New York in the mid-1800s.

Manhattan co*cktail Recipe (2)

The beauty of the Manhattan co*cktail lies in its simplicity and the quality of its ingredients. Traditionally, the drink is made with three key components: rye whiskey, sweet vermouth, and Angostura bitters. Rye was the original choice, but bourbon is commonly used today, offering a slightly sweeter profile.

If you like Manhattans, try my Fall-inspired Manhattan or the similar Brooklyn co*cktail and the Boulevardier! Looking for more delicious whiskey classic co*cktails? Don’t miss my Old Fashioned co*cktail, Whiskey Sour, or Sazerac.

Ingredients

  • Rye whiskey: the Manhattan is classically made with American rye, however, bourbon is a common substitute if you prefer. I prefer bourbon but interchange often!
  • Sweet vermouth: look for Carpano Antica Formula, Dolin, Punt E Mes, or Noilly Pratt.
  • Aromatic bitters: look for the classic Angostura bitters, Scrappy’s Aromatic bitters, or Fee Brothers Aromatic bitters.
  • Optional brandied cherry: I like Luxardo.

Variations: Manhattan Versus Perfect Manhattan

Although the perfect Manhattan and regular Manhattan are the same drink, there are some variations. Traditionally, a classic Manhattan ismade with whiskey, sweet vermouth, and bitters. The perfect Manhattan is made with one unique difference, equal parts sweet and dry vermouth.

For example, if a classic Manhattan is made with 2 parts whiskey to 1 part vermouth, we would split the vermouth into 1/2 sweet vermouth and 1/2 dry vermouth, retaining the initial overall vermouth ratio in the co*cktail. The perfect Manhattan is a touch lighter in color and sweetness, more similar to the Brooklyn co*cktail.

Best Whiskey for a Manhattan

  • For rye whiskey, look for Rittenhouse, George Dickle, Michter’s, Putnam, or Sazerac Rye.
  • If you prefer bourbon, I recommend Buffalo Trace, Larceny, Elijah Craig, Knob Creek, and Rowan’s Creek.

Expert Tips

  • Pick up some good vermouth: there’s no point in wasting nice whiskey with cheap vermouth. Here are a few of the best sweet vermouths without breaking the bank. Look for Carpano Antica Formula, Dolin, Punt E Mes or Noilly Pratt.
  • Always stir with ice, never shake: whiskey co*cktails should always be stirred, otherwise, you’ll introduce unwanted oxygen and chips of ice into the drink. The ice will add just enough water to smooth the whiskey without diluting your co*cktail.
  • Experiment with different types of bitters and garnishes: Angostura bitters and a Luxardo cherry garnish is the most traditional approach, but I like to switch it up with cherry bitters, orange bitters,Peychaud’s bitters, and an orange peel garnish. I like the subtle twists that add different aromas and flavors.

FAQs

What is a Manhattan co*cktail made of? ›

The Manhattan has managed to remain one of the most popular co*cktails in the world for well over a century. A combination of whiskey, sweet vermouth, bitters, and a maraschino cherry garnish, this drink embodies the classic, spirit-forward, and aromatic school of co*cktails.

What's the difference between a Manhattan and an old fashioned? ›

Both co*cktails call for whisky and Angostura bitters, but the defining factor lies in their sweetening agents. The Old Fashioned opts for straightforward sugar or syrup, helping to soften the whisky. In contrast the Manhattan favours a sweet vermouth – adding fruity and caramel flavours into the mix.

What is the ratio for a Manhattan? ›

The Whiskey to Vermouth Ratio

A 2:1 ratio is a good starting point and the most common mix for the Manhattan. Many drinkers also like a 4:1 mix with just 1/2 ounce of sweet vermouth for 2 ounces of whiskey.

What kind of vermouth for Manhattan? ›

For a classic Manhattan, we want to use “sweet” vermouth, which actually isn't all that sweet. Sweet vermouths are dark red or brown, not clear. My favorite options are Dolin and Carpano Antica. Dolin is the softer and smoother of the two, which is not to say that it's boring.

What is the best alcohol for a Manhattan? ›

While the Manhattan traditionally calls for rye whiskey, sweet vermouth, and bitters, bourbon is an increasingly popular choice in bars across the United States.

Is Manhattan a strong co*cktail? ›

Strong and booze-forward, a Manhattan packs a hint of bitterness and some herbal qualities thanks to sweet vermouth. Versions with bourbon yield a slightly sweeter drink, while rye-spiked interpretations skew drier and spicier.

Is bourbon or whiskey better in a Manhattan? ›

American Rye whiskey is typically used over Bourbon in the classic co*cktail recipe. This is because an average co*cktail recipe calls for sugar or a mixture or sweeter liquors. Some may find that substituting for Bourbon is cloy. However, replacing American Rye with Bourbon is another variant of classic co*cktails.

What's stronger, Negroni or Old Fashioned? ›

Old-Fashioned — (38.09%, 2.44oz in volume, 0.93oz alcohol) Bloody Mary — (12%, 7.5oz in volume, 0.9oz alcohol) Negroni — (20.13%, 4oz in volume, 0.81oz alcohol)

What is the difference between a perfect Manhattan and a Manhattan? ›

The perfect Manhattan is indeed a great co*cktail, though the name doesn't refer to its perfection. Instead, it adds dry vermouth to the classic Manhattan's trio of whiskey, sweet vermouth, and bitters.

What can you use instead of sweet vermouth in a Manhattan? ›

If instead you're craving a Manhattan and out of sweet vermouth, use Port or sweet Madeira. We've also used a sweet wine like Manischewitz, so if you happen to have that lying around, it can work too. Does sweet vermouth go bad? ›

Vermouths like Martini are fortified wines that oxidise quickly so once opened, store in the fridge and drink within a maximum of three months but ideally finish it within the first month. After that point, there will be no harmful effects to you, but the taste will be pretty nasty.

How many dashes of bitters are in a Manhattan? ›

The general guideline is two parts whiskey to one part vermouth with two to three dashes of bitters. You can go up to three parts to one and add a couple more dashes, at your own risk, and no one will judge you ... too much.

Can I order a Manhattan neat? ›

Sometimes people use the term “straight” interchangeably with “neat,” which is where the confusion begins so always check with the bartender just in case. Classic examples of drinks served straight up are a martini, manhattans, sidecars, sazeracs, pisco sours, and grasshoppers.

What does it mean if a customer asks for something neat? ›

What Does “Neat” Mean in a Bar? The term “neat” is most commonly used (and asked) when ordering bourbon, rye, or brandy. When you order a liquor neat, it means that you want a shot of liquor poured straight from the bottle into the glass and served at room temperature.

What is the best affordable vermouth for Manhattans? ›

Even high-end vermouth is not particularly expensive, but if you're throwing a party and need a mountain of Manhattans on a budget, look no further than Cinzano Rosso. It's an intensely colored vermouth with plenty of sweetness and viscosity that can add mouthfeel to co*cktails, along with complex bitterness.
