Master Mix: Dump Recipes
Freezer to Crockpot

These recipes are referred to as dump recipes because you dump all the ingredients into a gallon sized freezer bag and store as a freezer meal, then you thaw the bag and dump the ingredients into a crockpot (or on a pan for baking or grilling) to cook.

These are quick go to recipes. At my neighborhood store I will often find big bags of chicken drumsticks marked down because they are approaching their expiration date. They are still good if I can get them into the freezer asap, so these dump recipes are perfect for that. Also worth picking up a extra bag of boneless skinless chicken breasts each time you shop and make one freezer dump chicken to slowly build up your freezer inventory.

Here are a few of my favorites. I will start with 2 that are not for chicken and then go to the chicken ones. (although all the recipes would be great with any of meat really.)

FAQs

What is the biggest mistake to avoid when making a dump cake? ›

What Is the Biggest Mistake to Avoid When Making Dump Cake? If this is your first time making a dump cake, it may appear that we've forgotten an important instruction — stirring. But stirring is exactly what you do not want to do for this style of dessert.

Why is my dump cake still powdery? ›

If you've baked your dump cake and there's still cake mix powder on the top, it's likely because the butter wasn't evenly distributed on top of the cake. When assembling your dump cake recipe, be sure to spread the cake mix in a thin even layer and space the pats of butter evenly across the top.

Do dump cakes work? ›

Besides the cringe-worthy name, most dump cakes are way too sweet and can be kind of a one-note experience. Using canned pie filling and cake mix also means loads of preservatives and who knows what else going into your cake. Also, sometimes when you just "dump" things into a pan, they don't always bake evenly.

Why is it called dump cake? ›

A dump cake is an American dessert similar to a cobbler but with a cake-like topping. It is so named because it is prepared by "dumping" ingredients (typically canned fruit or pie filling, followed by a boxed cake mix) into a cake pan without mixing.

Why do you not mix dump cakes? ›

Again, do NOT mix.

It might look silly and feel counter-productive, but it's the trick to ensuring a crusty, crumbly, buttery top, and a gooey interior. Alternatively, some recipes will call for melting the stick of butter and drizzling it evenly over the entire portion of dry cake mix instead of using cold butter.

How do you tell if a dump cake is done? ›

Bake until the tops are brown and bubbly, 45 minutes to 1 hour. Serve with whipped cream.

What happens if you stir dump cake? ›

For some reason, nearly every dump cake recipe insists that the ingredients are not to be stirred. (In fact, most recipes add extra emphasis to this instruction by writing it in all-caps: DO NOT STIR!!!) The result of this laissez-faire approach is a half-baked cake.

Is dump cake supposed to be gooey? ›

Once baked, a dump cake comes out like a cross between fluffy cake and melty cobbler. Soft ooey-gooey bars come to mind, except more scoopable. Many people choose to use store-bought pie filling or canned fruit as the base, but you can really customize it to fit your taste.

Is dump cake supposed to be mushy? ›

Compared to other kinds of cakes, dump cake does bake up a little less caky and little more gooey thanks to all of the delicious fruit. It has a similar consistency to a fruit cobbler or crisp and is served by the scoop rather than the slice!

Do you dump cake from pan before or after cooling? ›

It's important to pay attention to the specifics called for in a recipe, but in general, most cakes are best removed from the pan after cooling for 10 to 20 minutes. Try it too soon, and it may fall apart. Wait too long, and it may stick.

Why are fairy cakes so good? ›

They are half the size with a lot less decoration, just as cute, and it is safe to say, it is the sponge that is the star, not the 'frosting'. Fairy cakes are perfect for parties, and are easy to make. Just keep the sponge nice and light, and the decoration simple – they never fail to make people smile.

Why is it called Texas cake? ›

The origins of this cake are murky. Some sources say it may have first shown up in a Texas newspaper, which is why it's called "Texas" sheet cake, while others claim the name comes from the fact that it's the size of Texas. Regardless of its origins, this cake is truly a crowd-pleaser.

What is sinking cake? ›

The sinking of your cake during cooling occurs due to various factors, such as excessive mixing of the batter, inadequate leavening agents, and oven temperature fluctuations. These issues can result in an uneven rise and subsequent collapse in the center of the cake as it cools down.
