The Myth of the “Biogenetic Law”
2001 •
Brian Freeman
The recent article, "Haeckel's Embryos and Evolution" (Wells, ABT, May 1999), is a timely reminder that significant parts of Haeckel's diagrams of embryos were forged, as Haeckel himself publicly admitted in a letter to the Berliner Volkszeitung on 29th December 1908... Today, all we need to know of Haeckel's "law" is that it is false and that it cannot be rescued by subtle rewording, or by claims that it is only partially true. Once this mental straightjacket is cast aside, along with its inaccurate concepts and terminology, it is possible to open our students' minds to the unique ontogeny of each species, and to recast evolution in a totally different and exciting framework.

Antibacterial activities of some Borneo plant extracts against pathogenic bacteria of Aeromonas hydrophila and Pseudomonas sp

The objective of the present study was to explore the antibacterial activity from some plant extracts against Aeromonas hydrophilla and Pseudomonas sp. pathogenic bacteria for tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus). The plant extracts were obtained by using ethanol and the concentration of the extract was 500-600 mg L and the the inhibition zone was measured after 24 h at 30°C. The results showed that 16 extracts have antibacterial activity with more than 10 mm against A. hydrophila and eight extracts against Pseudomonas sp. The highest activity was shown by the black cumin (Nigella sativa) extract against both bacteria. The effective dose of the extract as an antibacterial substance, against both bacteria, were 800 and 900 mg L Boesenbergia pandurata to A. hydrophila, 600 and 900 mg L Solanum ferox to Pseudomonas sp., and concentration of Zingiber zerumbet 200 and 2,000 mg L effective to inhibit A. hydrophila bacteria.
Assessing Farm-Scale Nutrient Flow Pathways and Nitrate Attenuation in Rangitikei Sand Country

Recently, there has been significant agricultural development in lower North Island coastal dune areas, which have become viable for production under irrigation. However, little is known about transport and fate of nutrients lost from intensive farms in this environment. A case study farm was selected and monitored from April to September 2016, to assess flow pathways of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) and N transformation ‘attenuation’ in an intensively-farmed, irrigated dairy farm within the Rangitikei dune country. A total of nine piezometers and twelve surface water sample sites were established to monitor shallow groundwater and surface waters in drains and stream flowing through the farm. The shallow groundwater piezometers were divided between four sites covering main soils types on the farm, and extended to depths of 3 and 6 m below ground level (bgl). The groundwater samples were collected monthly and analysed for nitrate-N, ammoniacal-N, total-N, dissolved reactive P and t...

Helical Structure and Packing Orientation of the S2 Segment in the Shaker K+ Channel
1999 •
stephen monks
Six transmembrane segments, S1–S6, cluster around the central pore-forming region in voltage-gated K+ channels. To investigate the structural characteristics of the S2 segment in the Shaker K+ channel, we replaced each residue in S2 singly with tryptophan (or with alanine for the native tryptophan). All but one of the 23 Trp mutants expressed voltage-dependent K+ currents in Xenopus oocytes. The effects of the mutations were classified as being of low or high impact on channel gating properties. The periodicity evident in the effects of these mutations supports an α-helical structure for the S2 segment. The high- and low-impact residues cluster onto opposite faces of a helical wheel projection of the S2 segment. The low-impact face is also tolerant of single mutations to asparagine. All results are consistent with the idea that the low-impact face projects toward membrane lipids and that changes in S2 packing occur upon channel opening. We conclude that the S2 segment is a transmemb...
