JohnSeymourIrvin

June251931 - May132024

John Seymour Irvin was born on June 25,1931 in the small town of Woodland, Washington, the second child of four born to John Howard Irvin and Dorothy “Bunny” Seymour. As a child, this large family moved to a number of small towns in the Pacific Northwest states of Washington, Idaho, and Oregon, where John discovered his great passion for the outdoors. The family eventually settled in Corvallis, Oregon, where his father served as principal and football coach at Corvallis High School, until he died of heart failure when John was just 15 years old. His mother, also a public school educator, and siblings remained in Corvallis and John graduated from Corvallis High School in 1949. He continued on to the University of Oregon in nearby Eugene the following year.
As a U of O freshman, John ran track as an Oregon Duck under the coaching of Bill Bowerman. He earned his bachelor’s degree in Economics in 1954, and then enlisted in the U.S. army, where he was stationed in Okinawa, Japan during the Korean Conflict. John returned to the U of O after two years of service to study law, graduating in 1959. He practiced labor law for the state of Oregon throughout the span of his career, both with the Department of Justice and the Oregon State Employees Association (now SEIU). He retired as a Senior Assistant Attorney General for the State of Oregon in 1995.
John married his first wife, Audrey, in 1958, and together they had three daughters, Valerie, Heidi, and Renee, before their divorce in 1969. In 1970, John met his future wife and lifelong partner, Judy Davies, and her daughter Debbie. In 1971, the two were married in Portland, Oregon. John adopted Debbie that same year, and together John and Judy had two more daughters, Penny and Jennifer.
John, a self-described “avid jogger,” was a familiar sight running his meticulously measured loops in Bush Park, doing laps around the local track, and participating in fun runs throughout the Salem area. His passion for singing led him to join several choral groups, including the Festival Chorale, the Salem Community Choir, and the St. Paul’s Episcopal Church Choir. A highlight was performing with Festival Chorale at Carnegie Hall in New York City in 2002. Renowned for his dry humor and sharp wit, John had a talent for writing and performing satirical songs about politics and current events, accompanying himself on the ukulele at social gatherings. What didn’t find its way into his songs often became thoughtful letters to the editor, reflecting his unique insights.
Beyond his many hobbies, John cherished spending time with his daughters and grandchildren. He was a constant presence at their concerts, plays, sporting events, and family celebrations, always eager to share in the joy of their milestones.
John is survived by his loving wife Judy of 53 years, his six daughters: Valerie (Doug), Heidi (Scott), Renee (Jan), Debbie, Penny (Joe) and Jennifer (Dustin), ten grandchildren Sarah, Arika, Gavin, Owen, Aiden, Ben, Natalie, Anna, Alexander and Joey, one great grandchild Kai, and loyal pet companion, Millie. He is predeceased by his parents, brother Stan and sister Sally and survived by his younger sister, Victoria Lam.
The funeral service to honor John’s life will be held at the Woodland Chapel in Salem, Oregon on June 1st, 2024 at 2:00 P.M., followed by a celebration of life at Judy’s home. The family would like to extend a special thank you to the hospice workers at Traditions Hospice for their loving care, especially Chad, Nook, and volunteer Brent. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Southern Poverty Law Center.

JackE.McLean

April281935 - May22024

Jack E. McLean Jr. died May 2, 2024 after telling his family he was done with birthdays. He said this for the previous ten birthdays, but this time he meant it. Jack was born April 28, 1935 in San Diego, California to Mazell and Jack E. McLean Sr. He spent his younger years growing up on his maternal great uncle`s ranch, Paradise Chinchilla Ranch in Lakeside, California. There he tricked people to pick and eat raw olives from the olive grove, learned to care for chinchillas and assorted farm animals, and set an entire hillside on fire conducting a science experiment with magnesium near the ranch’s water reservoir.

At Grossmont High School, where he graduated in 1953, Jack was active in student council and speech and debate. Jack took classes at San Diego State University but ultimately joined the Army for two years in 1958.

Jack would tell stories to anyone who would listen, and this made him a great salesman, first working in his parents’ liquor store Cork & Bottle in La Puente and then various beer and wine distributors in the Willamette Valley after Jack decided to leave crowded Southern California for the promised land that is Oregon in 1972.

He shared his love of reading, learning, classical music, good food, and cursing with his three daughters and also enjoyed reading bedtime stories in different voices and helping them with homework. Jennifer learned to play craps and poker. Heather listened to operas with Dad as he narrated what was happening. Megan loved playing cribbage with Dad. He may not have had the patience to teach his daughters to drive, but he did teach them the essential driving knowledge of knowing the backroads and side streets.

Jack enjoyed cooking and spent weekends in the kitchen dirtying every pot and pan because he had able-bodied children to clean up after him. His family enjoyed his culinary efforts but still teased him decades later about the tuna burritos he made one evening.

He loved being grandpa and papa to Liam Sharp and Nathaniel and Abigale Looney.

Left to remember all his stories and clean up his crap (Dad’s words) are his wife of 59 years Gale, daughters Jennifer McLean, Heather McLean (David Sharp), and Megan Looney (Jim) and his younger sister Linda McGue.

BrianEugeneWalther

October181961 - April262024

Brian Eugene Walther passed away peacefully in the presence of loved ones on April 26, 2024, in the city of his birth, Salem, Oregon. Born on October 18, 1961, to the late Laurel Lynn and Judy Ann Walther, he is survived by the love of his life and wife of 24 years, Michelle, her daughter Emily, mother-in-law Gladys Allen, and sister-in-law Debra Cooper. He is also survived by his sisters Patricia (Patty) White (husband John) and Kelly Shaner (husband Ron), brother Kevin (wife Roma Lee), and numerous nieces and nephews.
Brian lived a life of passion and showered it on those around him. He was a fiercely proud man and a protector of those he loved. If you were his friend, you were his friend for life. He would not forget you or the event or circ*mstance that brought you together. He was a very compassionate man with an amazing capacity to love.
Through the years, Brian owned numerous pets including dogs, cats, and birds. They brought as much joy to his life as he did theirs. His compassion for animals extended beyond the household evidenced by his hand feeding “Jasper” the hummingbird this winter when the bird feeders froze.
The man was an artist when cooking in the kitchen, grilling on the barbecue, and working with a meat smoker. Introducing someone to a new taste or texture brought him joy. If he ever grilled a steak, boiled up a fresh crab or smoked up a slab of pork for you, it was a meal you would not soon forget. If you were lucky, you got to enjoy his famous Apple Crisp!
“B-Dub” to his friends or “Jokester” to his nieces, Brian had an unquenchable thirst for life. There was not a prop he would not use in a picture or a prank he would not pull if he thought he could get away with it. He was the oldest kid at any State Fair he attended, and the neighborhood ice cream man knew him by name.
Brian’s hobbies included following the New York Yankees religiously, NASCAR, chasing the elusive “good deal” at any store or garage sale he and Patty could find, staying at the beach or renting a cabin at Silver Creek Falls, deep sea fishing, attending concerts, and enjoying “retro” candy. Blessed with a green thumb, Brian enjoyed gardening. He was proud of his massive star gazers, numerous “peanut butter” trees, the super-secret patented berry vines he grew, and the excellent results that many years of landscaping projects have produced.
In remembrance of Brian, those of us who had the privilege and honor to share our life with him can be assured of two things: Brian’s love for Michelle was unwavering, tender, deeply felt and unquestionable; and Brian’s reunion with his mother and father brought him joy beyond our comprehension.

Often referred to by others as “Marky Mark”, he was full of love, kindness, and a whole lot of fun. RonaldEdwardHunt

May221933 - April22024

Ronald (Ron) Edward Hunt of Salem, Oregon went to be with the Lord on April 2nd, 2024. He lived life to the fullest and died peacefully at Capital Manor in West Salem from heart related issues. Ron was born on May 22nd, 1933, in Portland, Oregon to William and Lucille (Bowman) Hunt.

Ron had a life-long love of sports, especially baseball. As a baseball pitcher, he achieved all-city and all-state status at Washington High School in Portland, Oregon. Ron was scouted by the Chicago Cubs and played pro ball in their Pacific Coast League (PCL). Years later, he also enjoyed volunteering as a pitching coach at Salem Academy High School.

During his years at Portland State University (PSU), he interned with the Oregonian as a sportswriter, covering sporting events and writing a weekly sports column. Ron served in the U.S. Navy Air Force on the flight deck of the USS Kearsarge aircraft carrier in the Pacific during the Korean War. Upon returning to Portland after his military service, he completed a Bachelor of Science, focusing on history and journalism at PSU.

Ron and Colleen (Doerfler) were married on June 24th, 1972, at Maranatha Church in Portland. Though raised as an atheist, he became a Christian in his early 30’s after someone from Campus Crusade referenced Matthew 18:3, “If you don`t change and become like a child, you will never get into the kingdom of heaven.” After hearing these words, the Holy Spirit did a work in his heart, and he immediately gave his life to Jesus. From then on, his faith was an important part of his life.
He began working in the hearing aid field in 1958. As an entrepreneur, he opened offices in Portland, Eugene, Salem, Silverton, along with branch offices in several other Oregon locations. He developed lasting friendships with many he encountered and took joy in helping people. He retired just before he turned 85, and often said that working kept him young.

DonaldRandallLeavitt

July61957 - March262024

Following a two-year, hard-fought battle with cancer, Donald Randall Leavitt, 66, started a new journey in the presence of his Savior on March 26, 2024, while surrounded by his family. Until the very end, he lived out the words of 2 Timothy 4:7 – “I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith.”

Don was born July 6, 1957, in Tacoma, WA, to Don and Donna Rae Leavitt and was the youngest of 4 children. The family moved to Oregon where Don graduated from Molalla High School in 1975. He earned his B.A. in Business from Biola University in 1980, and an M.B.A. from Portland State in 1984. He spent 18 years as a Manager with Beneficial Finance before joining the faculty at Corban University in 2000. In 2017 he earned his D.B.A. from Northwestern. While at Corban he taught Economics, Personal Finance, Business Law, and Management in Leadership – retiring in December 2023. He took Corban students to Indonesia for Educational Business Tours to visit the Chamber of Commerce/Stock Markets, volunteered to host incoming Corban freshmen, and organized a meet and greet for the freshman seminar before school began. Though moving into education meant a cut financially, Don believed God had called him, and he would honor the legacy of his pastor dad by ministering over 23 years to college students.

While at Biola Don met Joanne Lackey. It would take 3 years for Don to finally say “I love you” and ask her to marry him – and lucky for him she said yes. They married and built a life together in Salem, OR, with their 3 children: Don, Michael, and Tina. Don had an adventurous spirit and enjoyed vacations with family, attended Motocross events, and was not afraid to try something new. Don taught Sunday school at Salem Alliance and helped with the Youth Wake BBQ, a wrap-up gathering for middle school youth from 5 different churches after doing service projects. He also found great joy in the little things: babysitting his grandkids, singing to Chicago or Keith Green, watching a good movie or Formula One, drinking Mt. Dew, driving to Stayton for Big Town Hero, and especially loved a properly manicured lawn.

He was a huge sports fan – especially any Corban team. In his younger days, he played basketball regularly with his family, making sure to keep score of who was winning each new “season.” Once knee surgeries and an aging body took him off the court, it didn’t take long before he found the next outlet for his competitive spirit - the golf course. Although his passion for competing did not always mean being successful, that didn’t stop him from teasing opponents and finding joy while playing.

Don was a big personality, quick to tease, and brought laughter and levity to any event – even if not completely appropriate! He could make friends wherever he went, and his absence will be deeply felt by all who knew and loved him.
Don is preceded in death by his parents Don (2022) and Donna Rae (2013). He is survived by siblings: Dawn Marlene (Carl) Pleasants (Charlotte, NC), Marcia (Neal) Jones (Salem, OR), and Michele (Doug) Smith (Port Ludlow, WA) as well as 5 grandchildren: Chloe, Elizabeth, Henry, Madison, and Abigail, as well as his grand-dog, Mila. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather whose legacy will continue. A celebration of life will take place Saturday, April 6, from 2 pm-4 pm at First Baptist Church (395 Marion St. NE, Salem, OR 97301). You may place any donations made in his memory to Salem Academy Christian School at SalemAcademy.org/Giving or mail to 942 Lancaster Dr. NE, Salem, OR, 97301. He will be interred at City View Cemetery in Salem, OR.

Charles `Chuck`BurnetteBriggs

June261946 - March152024

Obituary for Charles Burnette Briggs

Our beloved husband, father, brother and friend, Chuck Briggs, went to be with his Lord and Savior on March 15, 2024, following a brief illness.

Chuck was born in Owosso, Michigan on June 26, 1946, to Harley & Helen Briggs, the second of six children in the Briggs family. Chuck`s competitive spirit early on landed him in a pot of scalding water (literally) when he was two years old, as he sought to win a sword fight with his older brother. He was rushed to the Owosso hospital with little to no chance of survival, but as his church family interceded for him in prayer, God completely healed that little boy, and he had no signs of burns anywhere on his body.

He loved the game of baseball from a young age. His Dad had played American Legion ball, so made sure all of his kids became proficient at the game! And Chuck was a mighty fine player! He was also an excellent student all the way through his years of schooling.

In 1953, when Chuck was 7 years old, the family moved west to Clarkston, Washington, then to Eugene and on to Corvallis, Oregon. Chuck asked and was granted permission to complete his last two years of High School at a church-sponsored private school in Bartlesville, Oklahoma. He attended college at what is now Bartlesville Wesleyan University, Biola University, and in 1991 he received his Bachelor of Arts Degree from George Fox University in Human Resources Management.

Chuck`s entrepreneurial spirit was evident early on in his childhood as was his knack for running a small business. He asked for and received a child`s desk for Christmas when he was five years old, and it always had a special place in his bedroom and his life. He was a natural salesman, charming ladies into buying magazines, Fuller Brush products and other items from him when he was still quite young. Chuck was also always known for his generosity, caring deeply for the needs of others and meeting those needs whenever he could.

Chuck married his first wife, Susan, in 1975 and during their early years together, Chuck built their first home. Chuck & Susan were blessed with two of Chuck`s greatest treasures, his sons Ryan and Daniel. Though he was busy providing for his young family, Chuck always made time for fun with his boys, and as they grew up, involved them as much as possible in his business pursuits.

After Chuck`s marriage to Susan ended in divorce, he spent a few years alone before meeting the love of his life, Janice Otis. They were married in 1999 and together built the beautiful home and life they enjoyed together for nearly 25 years.

Chuck is survived by his loving wife Janice, his sons Ryan and Daniel, his stepchildren, Sandra and Scott, his brother Bob and sisters Marilyn (Darrell), Suzy (Rusty), and Martha (Tim), many nieces and nephews and a whole host of friends who were `family` to him.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Harley and Helen Briggs and by his older brother, George Briggs.

A Celebration of Chuck`s Life will be held Saturday, May 18, 10:00 AM at his home church, where he served many years as a children`s Sunday school teacher and later as a faithful parking attendant: Salem Alliance Church, 555 Gaines Street NE, Salem, OR.

RobertC.Wilson

June161929 - March72024

I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith.”
2 Timothy 4:7

Robert C. Wilson was born in Airlie, Oregon, to Silas Clyde and Caroline Wilson, the youngest of nine children. His early years were spent on the family home place, but like many families during WWII, their home was claimed by the government and incorporated into Camp Adair. Bob survived many adversities in his youth, including losing his mother at the age of 9, being forced to move from their family farm at 13, and changing schools several times before graduating from Independence High School in 1948.

After graduation, Bob worked and attended Oregon College of Education while playing for their baseball team. In 1951, he was drafted by the Army, where he was an instructor for Division Faculty before serving in Japan. He was honorably discharged in 1953 and then served 8 more years in the reserve. After returning stateside, Bob continued pursuing his degree and worked many different jobs to put himself through school. He had lots of adventures along the way, including playing baseball for a semi-pro team of local players.

Bob graduated from Linfield College in 1958 with a degree in Business Administration and moved to Roseburg that fall to begin working for Douglas County Welfare as a caseworker. In September of 1960, he entered the graduate school of Social Work at the University of Utah and earned his Master`s Degree in 1962. He was a caseworker and administrator for Lincoln County Child Welfare until 1964, where he then became a Family Counselor for Yamhill County Mental Health. In September of 1967, he was named the Director of Mental Health for Tillamook County, serving until 1988. He finished his 37-year career in the Mental Health field as an Alcohol and Drug Counselor for Linn County and retired in 1994.

Bob was committed to his work, but family was his first priority. He married the girl next door, Virdie Ward, in August of 1955, and had four children: Stanley (1957-66), Bryan (1959), Randall (1963), and Maureen (1970). He enjoyed and cherished his time with his children and always stayed busy with hobbies and projects: sports, fishing, hunting, harvesting hay, raising beef cattle, and taking care of rentals! Added blessings to the family included his son-in-law, Hossein, and four granddaughters who enriched his life: Sara-Jo, Milan, Aurelia, and Kiana. Over the last 30 years of “retirement”, he continued to care for both his friends and family, renovate houses, and tend to his orchard and yard projects. He was the hardest worker with the kindest heart.

Bob passed away at his home, where he had received loving care from his family. He is survived by his wife, Virdie, of 68 years, and his children and grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, siblings, and their spouses; he is survived by many nieces and nephews.

There will be a funeral service on Saturday, March 30, 12:00 pm, at City View Cemetery’s Chapel, 390 Hoyt Street in Salem, OR. A gathering at the family home in Monmouth will follow.

On April 6, 1968, she married” the absolute love of her life, her fierce warrior, David Shimeall.” They were married for nearly 56 years. She worked in the clerical end of education through every level except high school: From director of a preschool to the assistant to the registrar in a graduate school. When asked why she skipped high school she is reported to have answered, “I’m no dummy’.”
Anne loved to read, reading 3-4 books a week. She spent several years being a Reading Buddy at Turner Elementary School. When her children and grandchildren were in school she would go to see them perform in their activities.
She served as pianist in several churches and was the worship leader at Judson Baptist Church when her husband was pastor. As a pastor’s wife she was more comfortable painting Sunday school rooms and planting flowers on the church grounds than serving tea.
She loved the Lord and served Him in many different ways. She took three mission trips to Tecate, Mexico, and one to Kenya. Twice she got to go to Israel. The first time in 1980 she was involved in an archaeological dig at Lachish. Her faith was strong clear to the very end and she ran past the finish line into the arms of her Savior.

Rick passed away in peace surrounded by his loved ones on Monday, February 19, 2024, at Salem Hospital after a long battle with chronic kidney disease. He is survived by his loving wife Valerie Costa of Salem, their oldest son Curtis Costa and his wife Kiley Costa of Millersburg as well as their daughters Ellie and Colbie, and Rick and Valerie’s youngest son Nicholas Costa of Salem. Rick was born in Albany, California, but was raised in Fremont, California, and has been a passionate supporter of the San Francisco Giants & 49ers his entire life. He taught at many schools in his lifetime, including Waldo Middle School and McKay High School in Salem. In an ironic twist of fate, Rick was able to end his lifetime’s journey on President’s Day, after a long life in love with history and with a deep fascination with US presidents and US history. Although he loved history and his favorite sports teams deeply, the thing he loved most was his family and friends. He was a brilliant man of many interests and facets, and he will be dearly missed by all whose lives he touched. There will be no memorial service, as per Rick’s expressed wishes, the family will honor him via a private ceremony.

DelphineTheresaFreshour

November121944 - January282024

Delphine Theresa (Thurmeier) FreshourNovember 12, 1944 – January 28, 2024
Delphine was born in Southey, Saskatchewan, Canada, to John F. Thurmeier and Elsie (Fiege) Thurmeier. She passed peacefully at home, in the presence of her family, after a long battle with breast cancer.
She grew up in the community of Markinch, Sask., about 60 miles north of Regina. She lived on the family wheat ranch and attended school in the small town of Markinch. After graduating in 1963, she moved to Regina and attended Balfour Technical School for one year in the secretarial program. She started her professional career in Regina, where she worked for 4 years.
In May, 1966, she met her future husband Jerry on a blind date at the Fortuna Air Force Base in Fortuna, North Dakota. After a long-distance romance, the two were married in August of 1967, in Cupar, Sask. She left her home, her family and her friends and moved to Oregon shortly after being married. The couple lived in Salem while Jerry was stationed at Adair AFB, Corvallis. Delphine worked at State Farm Insurance for some time before moving to Monmouth, OR in 1969 and going to work at the Oregon College of Education (now Western Oregon University), where she worked for more than 30-years.
In 1971, Delphine and Jerry were blessed with the birth of their daughter, Dana Lee, followed by the birth of their son Todd Ryan in 1974. She was an amazing mom who raised two wonderful children, whom she adored. Later she would welcome and love Dana’s daughters Cassidy (24), and Regan (21). A few years after that, she fell in love with Todd’s son, Jordan (15). She loved her God, but her family was a close second. She loved family time and hugging her kids and grandkids right up to the end.
Except for one year when she moved back to Salem, Delphine lived in Monmouth for nearly 50 years. She had lived in South Salem since 2019. For most of her years in Monmouth, she was a member of Faith Lutheran Church, where she was active in a range of activities and offices until she was no longer able to serve. She had a love for her Lord that was evident after knowing her for only a short time. She used her 10-year battle with cancer as platform to set an example to others and to witness about her Savior. Her capacity to love knew no boundaries. Her family likes to say that Delphine loved well and deep and she was loved back the same way.
Delphine and Jerry joined Illahe Hills Country Club in 1975. She grew to love golf and she loved playing with family and friends. She began playing on a regular basis, first with the 9-Hole Lady’s Group and later with the 18-Hole group. She would come home excited about the things that happened during her round of golf, but more than that, she would always talk about the nice ladies she had played with that day. She may have never become as good a golfer as she wished, but she never lost her love for the game and the people with whom she played.
Delphine delighted in having family and friends in the house and visiting them whenever she could. She said she liked Thanksgiving best because it was the holiday meal she most loved to cook for everybody. Holidays were a special time for her. She loved to travel. She and Jerry had many wonderful trips, including annual trips to Arizona for their winter hiatus.
Delphine is survived by her husband: Jerry (Salem); Daughter Dana and her fiancé David, Albany; Todd (Salem) and fiancé Sydni (Portland); Granddaughter Cassidy (Corvallis), Granddaughter Regan (Corvallis), and Grandson Jordan (Salem). Brother Norbert (Judy), Regina, Sask.; brother Mervin (Anne), Red Deer, Alberta. Brother-in-law Ron Freshour, Salem; and brother-in-law Lynn (Linda), Salem.
As we tenderly say our loving goodbyes to our Delphine, may the cherished memories we hold become a testament to a life well-lived. May the love she shared continue to echo through the heats she touched. Thanks to God that we got to have her in our lives.

James Leon Randle

Jim Randle of Salem, a retired state employee who was also a lifelong artist, died on Jan. 25 after a brief illness. He was 77.

Randle completed his career as a 12-year State of Oregon employee, known to friends as the “voice of the DMV” for having recorded the greeting first heard by those calling the Division of Motor Vehicles. He relished his DMV assignment of answering motorists’ phone and e-mail questions.

Prior to his DMV service, Randle’s career included work with the SAIF Corporation, Farmers Insurance district office and the Southern Pacific railroad.

He was born in Eugene on May 6, 1946, to James and Clarice Randle, and was a 1964 graduate of North Eugene High School. Before completing college, he served with the U.S. Air Force in Vietnam, where he was a precision aerial photo specialist for the largest reconnaissance unit there. He met Patty Gilbert while living in Denver, where he completed his military service as an instructor at Lowry AFB, and they married in August 1969.

Randle was a 1973 graduate of the University of Oregon, where he majored in business administration.

Randle enjoyed creating art in a variety of mediums, and would say that his art was first encouraged by his third-grade teacher at Eugene’s Whiteaker Elementary School and by always being given art supplies as a child. Having recently been in long-term care, he created several dozen paintings and pastels that graced the walls of his room.

He had been an active member of Westminster Presbyterian Church in Salem, where he served as an elder, taught Sunday school and volunteered in other capacities. For more than 30 years he belonged to a Salem men’s group, whose members knew him as a treasured friend and accomplished cook. Friends and associates delighted in his long-time Christmas tradition of preparing and sharing generous amounts of peanut brittle.

Randle is survived by his wife, Pat of Salem; by a son, Jeff Randle of Seattle; and by two sisters, Jeanne Garst of Milwaukie, Oregon, and Coralee Baker of Eugene.

MarionEllenBryson

October51930 - January42024

SALEM - Marion Ellen Bryson, 93, passed away into the loving arms of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on January 1, 2024. She was surrounded by family in her final moments. Marion was born in Shamokin, Pennsylvania on October 5, 1930 to Mary and John Henninger. She was the oldest of 10 children. From the beginning, Marion was energetic and industrious. As a child, she often made and sold small bags of potato chips to neighbors as a way of funding outings to the movies. After graduating from Coal Township High School in 1948, Marion spent several years traveling the country with friends and working as a waitress at resorts across Pennsylvania, New York, Florida, and Las Vegas. One of her favorite memories from this time was meeting her favorite singer, Frank Sinatra, while working in Las Vegas. She met Frank Robert Bryson and was married on October 21, 1952. They briefly moved to Spokane, Washington, where they welcomed their son, Jeff, before settling in Salem, Oregon in 1960.
Professionally, Marion worked for Martin Brothers Sign Company as a
bookkeeper for 30 years before retiring (for the first time) at the age of 65.
Never one to sit idle, she quickly decided retirement was overrated and went
back to work doing marketing for National Glass and Salem Auto Body until
the age of 89. She thoroughly enjoyed her job, which allowed her to meet
many people. She never left a customer visit without first ensuring that
everyone in the office had received a cookie or piece of candy.
Marion loved being around people, and was a generous hostess. No one
who visited her home ever left hungry - even when she was not home, she
would leave snacks out for the landscapers, mailman, and anyone else who
happened to stop by. Her grandchildren and great grandchildren often
joked that at parties, it was difficult to tell whose birthday it was, because
she brought cards and gifts for everyone.
An avid gardener, Marion could often be found working in her yard. She
grew an assortment of fruits, vegetables, and roses. She was known for her
delicious canned peaches, and recently inspired her four-year-old great
grandson to plant his own fruit garden using raspberry and strawberry
plants from her yard.
Marion walked closely with the Lord for nearly 60 years. She was committed
to attending bible studies, praying and telling others about Jesus. She volunteered
in the AWANA program at Salem First Baptist Church for several
years, and often brought a pack of neighborhood kids with her. She faithfully
sent out church devotionals - over 50 each month - to family and friends.
Marion is survived by her son Jeff (Debbie); grandsons Andrew (Victoria),
Kyle (Krissy); great grandsons, Beckett, Luke, and Henry; sibling’s Creta
(Jim), Mary Carol (Bob), Scarlett (Bill), Lois (Dennis), Helen (Ray), Jack
(Peggy), Jim (Sandy); and numerous nieces and nephews. She is preceded
in death by her parents, Mary and John Henninger; husband, Frank Bryson;
brother George (Sharon); and sister Joyce (Al).
We welcome friends and family of Marion to join us for a memorial service
in her honor. The service will be held on Saturday, January 20th at 2:00 pm
at Salem First Baptist Church, 395 Marion Street NE, Salem, Oregon

Elenita"Ellen"Alvarez Tompkins

January61956 - December232023

Elenita ’Ellen’ Alvarez Tompkins, born January 6, 1956 in Biñan, Laguna, Philippines, passed away peacefully in her home the morning of December 23, 2023. She is survived by husband Donald Tompkins, son Andrew Tompkins, grandson Hayden Tompkins, daughter and son-in-law Alyssa and Shawn Leedy, siblings Nellie Potterf, Edgar Alvarez, and Vicente Alvarez, and her many and much-beloved nieces and nephews.

In the Philippines, Ellen attended school at Lake Shore Educational Institution and graduated in 1972. She then emigrated to the United States in 1976 with brothers Edgar and Vicente and with help from her sisters Dorie and Nellie. Ellen attended college and received her associate’s degree from Linfield College and became a Certified Nursing Assistant through the Chemeketa Community College program. She worked as a CNA at Salem Hospital, ultimately retiring with a total of 41 years in her career and most notably in the inpatient rehabilitation unit. During her career, Ellen made many lasting friendships which she held dear to her heart and continued after she retired in early 2021.

Ellen and Don met in late 1985, through her sister entering her information into the newspaper. They bonded over many dates and even went to the Philippines together in 1987. Soon enough, they were married and had Andrew and Alyssa. Ellen ensured family life included several great memories like camping, road trips, birthday parties, and lots of time with cousins.

Ellen had as many hobbies as she had designer purses. She loved shopping wherever she went, be it Costco, Washington Square, Woodburn Outlets, or Nordstrom Rack. It was a rare occasion when she did not run into someone she knew while out. Ellen was also known for maintaining a beautiful garden, with flowers, fruits, veggies, and a koi pond. She would often make freezer jams, baked goods, and other dishes with her home-grown goodies. Ellen was an avid seamstress and was a vendor at many craft bazaars. For several years, she was also involved in dance groups that performed Polynesian and Filipino dances. Many of her relatives remember performing with her at the state fair. She was an accomplished DIYer who would find new projects around the house to complete, along with the help of her brothers. Ellen continued in her parents’ and sister’s tradition of hosting many family gatherings at “the blue house with the lions”.

Together with her brother in 2012, Ellen opened the Adoracion Adult Foster Home, a care home that provides a home-like setting for those who need assisted living. Her goal was to offer a family-like environment while caring for others: something she did for her eldest sister, Adoracion, and her parents, Helen and Vicente Sr. Ellen passed the care home to her sister-in-law Dolores (Dolly) Alvarez in 2022, so her legacy of caregiving with love and selflessness remains to this day.

Ellen will be deeply and sorely missed by all who loved her. May we uphold her caring manner in our daily actions and in the love that we have for one another. Please join us in remembering Ellen in the Facebook group “Remembering Elenita Alvarez-Tompkins” at https://www.facebook.com/groups/1118676439296953.
