State Tests in Ohio
What subjects are tested?
Ohio assesses four core subjects on state tests: Math, ELA, Social Studies and Science. Assessments in these subjects are used to identify how well Ohio students are growing in the knowledge and skills outlined in Ohio’s Learning Standards. Fall Testing Windows
- Grade 3 English language arts – Five consecutive school days, including makeups, within the Oct. 22 to Nov. 2 window
- High school end-of-course tests – Fifteen consecutive school days, including makeups, within the Dec. 3 to Jan. 11 window
Fall 2018 OST results for English language arts, mathematics, science and social studies tests will be available to districts in the Online Reporting System (ORS) on the following dates:
- Grade 3 ELA results for online testers will be released Monday, December 10, 2018 . Grade 3 ELA results for paper testers whose document was returned on-time and per procedures will be released Monday, December 17, 2018 .
- Printed family reports for Grade 3 English language arts tests are due in districts on January 21, 2019 .
- High school end-of-course results for online testers will be released Tuesday, February 19, 2019 . Results for high school end-of-course paper testers whose document was returned on-time and per procedures will be released Monday, February 25, 2019.
- Printed family reports for high school end-of-course tests are due in districts on March 25, 2019 .
Spring Testing Windows
School districts select 15 consecutive school days, including makeups, within each test window.
- English language arts - March 25 to April 26, 2019
- Mathematics, science and social studies - April 1 to May 10, 2019
Spring 2019 OST results for English language arts, mathematics, science and social studies tests will be available to districts in the Online Reporting System (ORS) on the following dates:
- Grade 3 ELA results for paper testers whose document was returned on-time and per procedures will be released Monday, June 17, 2019.
- Results for all other paper testers whose document was returned on-time and per procedures will be released Tuesday, June 25, 2019.
- Release dates for online tests results have not yet been determined.
- Printed family reports for all spring 2019 OSTs are due in districts on July 24, 2019.

#2 Prepare Students for Tech-Enhanced Question Types
Digital assessments present new opportunities for how to assess students. Practice throughout the year with these question types can prepare students for effective problem solving strategies. Below is a list of tech-enhanced question types that are on the Ohio State Tests with a short description of how they will be used to assess student learning. - Equation Items - Some test items in grades 3-5 ask for the student to enter an expression for their response. Students will earn full credit for a correct expression or equation (including equivalent fractions). To receive credit for an equation, both expressions must be equivalent. As students in grades 6-8 receive further instruction on equations and expressions with the Expressions and Equations domain, more precise usage is required for credit.
- Gap Match - Students must enter the correct word into a blank created in the answer. This will be either 1-point or multiple points. Single point items do not allow partial credit.
- Grid Question - Students plot points on a grid or dragging and dropping text or images. Partial Credit is possible.
- Hot Text - Students select an excerpt of the text to support their answer.
- Inline Choice - Students choose from a list in a drop down to select their answer.
- Matching Item - Students match answers for credit. Partial credit can be awarded.
- Table Item - Students are presented with a table of questions and must choose / sort the proper column for each row.
- Multi-Select Items - These are multiple choice questions with more than one correct answer. For grades 3-5, instructions will ALWAYS tell students how many answers to select (Select Two...). For End of Course (HS) exams, instructions will ALWAYS say "Select All Correct Answers" so students. Middle School asssessments will contain a mix of instructions so students should be ready for both.
- Multiple Choice - All multiple choice questions will be worth 1 point and will award no partial credit.
