Items purchased in store must be accompanied by the original sales receipt.

New books must be returned or exchanged by May 31st.

Used books must be returned or exchanged by May 24th.

Late Start Classes: books, both new and used must be returned within one week of class start. In addition to receipt, proof of dropping the late start class is required.

Items purchased after May 31st have a one week return policy.

Classes that are less than a full semester are subject to reduced return dates. Items are subject to inspection, management approval and must be brought in before the course starts.

Products are broken into general categories: Textbooks, access codes, digital content, kits and GM.

    • Textbooks are defined as books that are required for courses.

    • Access codes are any scratch off, peel off, or unwrapped item that includes a unique redemption code that allows you the customer to access digital course work or ematerials such as ebooks or digital copies.

    • Digital Content codes are any redemption codes provided through VitalSource that contain a unique redemption code that allows you, the customer, to access digital course work or e-materials such as ebooks or digital copies. These codes are checked digitally for refund eligibility and fall under the following return restrictions:

    • Kits are defined as any of the various item complied by departments that would include supplies for coursework. Frequently these are biology lab kits, geology kits, etc.

    • GM or general merchandise would be anything sold in store that is not a textbook, access code, food or health and beauty products.

Textbook Returns / Exchanges

Items defined as textbooks are eligible for returns that meet the following conditions:

  • Must be in the same condition as the item was purchased. New textbooks cannot contain any damage, highlighting or writing. Damage includes but is not limited to liquid, dirt, physical, scratches, ripped, torn or dog-eared pages that would indicate the copy of the book has been used. If damage on a textbook sold as new occurs, at the management's discretion may be refunded for a percentage of the original purchase price.

  • Bundles - any textbook that comes with additional books or codes is considered a bundle. Bundles must include all unused items and if they contain an access code cannot be revealed. All bundles are subject to inspection and management approval.

  • CPR / First aid books are non returnable once stamped by the department.

  • All textbooks are subject to inspection and management approval.

Access Codes

  • Access codes are non returnable once the unique code has been revealed.

  • Several courses offer a free 2 week trial of the required code - be sure to take advantage of that to prevent being stuck with a non returnable code.

  • Access code return dates are the same as textbooks.

  • All access codes are subject to inspection and management approval.


Digital Content Return Policy

There are a few important things to keep in mind when returning an eTextbook you purchased from VitalSource through the SJC Bookstore:

    • You have 14 calendar days to return an item from the date you purchased it.

    • You have not viewed or printed, in total, more than twenty percent (20%) of the VitalSource eTextbook.

    • You have not used any included access codes for any online resource that came with your eTextbook purchase.

    • You have not previously returned the same eTextbook from a prior purchase.

    • You are not returning an eTextbook from one of the publishers in our Return Policy Exceptions.

    • You have not returned a total of 3 or more eTextbooks in the past 90 days across all of your VitalSource Accounts.

You can only return items purchased directly from the SJC Bookstore. Items are digitally verified through VitalSource for return eligibility and exceptions cannot be made if they fail eligibility requirements.

Returns for VitalSource eTextbooks purchases through other retailers are subject to their respective returns and refunds policy.

Abuse of Return Policy: VitalSource reserves the right to refuse to sell or to provide refunds to any person for any reason not prohibited by law, including, but not limited to, abuse of its return policy.

Return Policy Exceptions:

Titles purchased from the following publishers will follow the return policies outlined below.

Cengage Unlimited:

For access codes delivered via a Cengage API, or any other non-shippable method, refunds must be requested within 14 days of registration/activation.

WileyPLUS:

A refund will be provided for unused WileyPLUS registration codes on requests made within 30 days of purchase through the VitalSource store.
A refund will be provided for used WileyPLUS registration codes on requests made within 14 days of purchase through the VitalSource store.
Please note: Once a refund is processed, your access to WileyPLUS will be terminated and all previous work completed with that code will be deleted.

Penguin Random House Return Policy:

You may cancel your VitalSource eTextbook purchase and request an immediate refund within 7 days of your initial purchase
You have not viewed or printed the eTextbook.

Simon & Schuster Return Policy:

You may cancel your VitalSource eTextbook purchase and request an immediate refund within 2 days of your initial purchase

HarperCollins Return Policy:

You may cancel your VitalSource eTextbook purchase and request an immediate refund within 2 days of your initial purchase
You have not viewed or printed, in total, more than two percent (2%) of the VitalSource eTextbook.

HarperCollins Christian Return Policy:

You may cancel your VitalSource eTextbook purchase and request an immediate refund within 2 days of your initial purchase
You have not viewed or printed, in total, more than two percent (2%) of the VitalSource eTextbook.

Hachette Digital Return Policy:

You may cancel your VitalSource eTextbook purchase and request an immediate refund within 3 days of your initial purchase
You have not viewed or printed, in total, more than two percent (2%) of the VitalSource eTextbook.

Courseware Return Policy:

You may request an immediate refund within 14 days of your initial purchase of an eResource.

McGraw-Hill Courseware Return Policy:

You may request an immediate refund within 14 days of your initial purchase of an eResource.

Standard Courseware Return Policy:

You may request an immediate refund within 14 days of your initial purchase of an eResource, provided that you have not yet viewed or used any access codes included with your eResource purchase

SJC Bookstore reserves the right to correct typographical errors in title, ISBN, pricing, or other errors provided by the listing company of the digital product.

Lab Kits and other Kits

  • Biology and geology lab kits are returnable as long as they are in the same purchased condition. Return dates are the same as textbooks.

  • Chemistry kits are non returnable in store once they have been redeemed. If you still have an unrevealed access code returns can be done in store.   • Cosmetology lab kits are non returnable once opened.

  • All kits are subject to inspection and management approval.

GM Returns

Items defined as GM products are eligible for returns that meet the following conditions:

  • Unless defective must be in original packaging.

  • Clothing must be is saleable condition. Strong odors or stains will void your return.

Refund Tenders

All refunds with the exception of debit cards and some checks, will be returned to the original form of payment. Debit cards will be returned as a credit to the original card used. Cards must be present at the time of refund. Student charges must be returned to the original account listed on the receipt.

Purchases made by check must wait 10 days for a refund. Refunds on a check under $500 will be paid out in cash. Refunds over $500 will be sent out in a check from the business office.

In Store Rental Refunds

  • Rentals made in store must be returned or exchanged by the dates listed for textbooks.

  • All conditions listed for textbooks must be met for rental returns.

  • All rentals are subject to inspection and management approval.

In Store Rental Returns

  • All rentals for the Summer are due back to the SJC bookstore on or before the date printed on your receipt. No exceptions can be made to this date as it is set by the partnering company.

Student Charge Exceptions

Due to the charging dates certain conditions will supersede the above listed policies.

All eligible returns and exchanges made with student charges must be completed by the last day to charge. For theSummer 2024 semester this is May 31st.
