"This is how I got my children to like cabbage. It is a simple recipe. It came from an old magazine clipping, do not remember which one. We usually have cornbread on the side with rice and sausage."

  1. This is NOT an authentic southern cabbage recipe especially not without the pepper flakes and sugar And also use chicken stock instead of water. Add diced onions, green peppers, garlic powder, onion powder. Man this recipe needs some help lol

  2. My dad cooked this cabbage recipe, and he was from the South. I'm from the West, and now I cook it. He served it to me and my brother when we were children. He also served it to us with a slice of Jiffy cornbread. I'd crumble the cornbread into the cabbage, and it was delicious! I still eat it that way. Thanks for the recipe.

  4. I added garlic and a little veggie broth instead of chicken, and then used grilled kilbasa instead of bacon (not boiled with cabbage). Very good.

  1. Yall! this recipe is a great basic start! but if you really want to add some KABOOM to the cabbage... make sure it's not water your putting the cabbage stockpot... I highly recommend using chickenbroth... if you want to make it super healthy broth make your own bone broth with Rot. chicken bones then add in strained bone broth to cabbage... YUM...I make mine like soulfood kapusta! I add boiled potato and cajun andouille chicken... I'm from New Orleans and I like spice! Hey! Try it and enjoy :)

  2. This dish turned out awesome! I used both bacon and hot smoked sausage and substituted the water with beef broth and instead of using salt I used a beef seasoning packet from a ramen packet. I also added garlic and dab of olive oil. I added the bacon and sausage to the pot at the end. I served it with jalapeno cornbread and I must say this was the best cabbage that I've made.

  3. This is very delicious! My husband said he could eat it every night for dinner! The only changes I made were that I added some fresh chopped garlic, ground pepper and a little Extra Virgin Olive Oil to it. I will definitely be making this again!! Thanks for sharing!

Cooking is what I do. I love looking for new recipes. I have three daughters, the last one left for college this year. Being a military family gives us the opportunity to try a variety of cuisine's from all over the world. I learned to cook from watching my father while I was growing up and have loved cooking as long as I can remember. A big thank you to everyone for this wonderful site.

FAQs

Why do you put baking soda in cabbage? ›

Adding baking soda to your boiling cabbage can help reduce the objectionable smell and maintain the green color long after when it typically turns grayish from cooking for too long. However, this may rid the cabbage of its nutritional value.

What is the healthiest way to eat cabbage? ›

Although you get different nutrients if you cook or ferment it, raw red cabbage in particular might give you the best nutritional boost per serving. Slice it very thinly and leave it for about 10 minutes to help bring out the fullest, most complex flavors. Then add it to salads or sandwiches or turn it into coleslaw.

Why is my cabbage soggy? ›

Not salting cabbage destined for slaw

Cabbage contains a high amount of water, and salting helps draw out some of this moisture from the cabbage leaves. This step can prevent your slaw from becoming too watery or soggy once you add the dressing. Excess moisture can dilute the flavors and make the slaw less appealing.

Why do you put vinegar in cabbage when boiling it? ›

From what I understand, when cabbage is cooked, the acid that the cabbage has evaporates, causing it to turn blue. To keep it red when cooking, try adding vinegar or lemon juice to retain the acid levels.

How long to soak cabbage in baking soda? ›

Submerge the fruit or vegetables in the baking soda water. Let soak for 12 to 15 minutes. The time will help the baking soda do its job. Swish the produce around in the water or push it down several times to ensure all sides of the produce is being cleaned.

Why do people add sugar to cabbage? ›

Some do, some do not - it's a matter of preference and/or the manner in which you're going to use the cooked cabbage. For instance, if I'm going to make sweet-and-sour cabbage, which I usually do if I'm going to serve it with German sausage, then I add sugar. Otherwise, I do not add sugar.

How do you cut gas out of cabbage? ›

To reduce the likelihood of experiencing gas after eating cabbage, consider cooking it thoroughly. This can help break down the fibers and make it easier to digest. Additionally, try adding caraway seeds or fennel seeds to your cabbage dishes, as these spices are known to help reduce gas.

Is cabbage good for high blood pressure? ›

The antioxidants in cabbage help reduce inflammation, which is linked to heart disease. Cabbage also contains something called anthocyanins. Several studies have found these compounds can lower blood pressure and reduce the risk of heart attack and stroke.

How many times a week should you eat cabbage? ›

To get the most benefit, try to consume ½ to ¾ cup cooked or 1 ½ cup raw cabbage per day at least 5 days per week. This is pretty easy to do since there are so many ways to prepare cabbage. Traditional methods of steaming or boiling cabbage can extract flavor and nutrients.

What does eating cabbage everyday do to your body? ›

The bottom line

It has an outstanding nutrient profile and is especially high in vitamins C and K. In addition, eating cabbage may even help lower the risk of certain diseases, improve digestion, and ease inflammation. Plus, cabbage makes a tasty and inexpensive addition to a number of recipes.

What happens when you put salt in a head of cabbage? ›

The salt pulls moisture out of the cabbage, seasons it, and leaves you with a super-crunchy texture that isn't raw or tough-tasting.

Can you cook cabbage too long? ›

You want to cook until tender, but err on the side of caution—overcooked cabbage will turn limp and give off a less-than-pleasant smell.

Why does cabbage stink when you cook it? ›

And that smell? That is due to the sulphur present in cabbage. The more you cook it, the stronger the smell of sulphur. It has been suggested that you put a slice of bread or lemon juice in the water you are using to cook the cabbage, in order to limit the odor.

What happens if you add baking soda to cabbage water? ›

The cabbage juice is called an indicator because it can tell you the pH of a solution based on the color that it changes. The vinegar will turn the cabbage juice red because it is an acid (acetic acid). The baking soda will turn the cabbage juice greenish-yellow because it is a base (sodium bicarbonate).

What can I add to cabbage to reduce gas? ›

Cabbage contains an insoluble sugar and a lot of fiber. These can cause gas in some people. However, there are some herbs that might be useful, cooked with the cabbage, to reduce the amount of gas. These include dill seed, sage, caraway, basil, oregano, ginger, fennel, and allspice.

What can you put on cabbage to stop bugs from eating it? ›

Growing aromatic plants amongst the cabbage-type plants — like hyssop, thyme, wormwood, celery, dill, sage and onions — will all help to confuse these insects. BT (Bacillus thuringiensis) or Dipel, if you spray each week, can also control these insects.

What can I add to cabbage to prevent gas? ›

Pairing cabbage with digestive aids such as ginger, turmeric, or cumin can help improve digestion and minimize gas. Additionally, incorporating probiotic-rich foods like yogurt or kefir into your meals can also support digestive health.
