Spring Decorating Ideas (1)

Spring always makes me want to freshen up my home, so I asked one of the home designers I have worked with in the past to share some of her top spring decorating ideas.

This guest post on Low Cost Decorating Ideas for Spring, originally published in 2018, was a collaboration with Deborah Heath, formerly of Design by Deborah.

When the flowers pop up and everything awakes from its hibernation, colour, warmth and light returns with energy and abundance, and doesn’t it feel good! It’s the perfect time to explore new decorating ideas for spring. You can’t help but be affected by it. In fact many will say that spring is when you should be making your New Year resolutions because this is when you have the enthusiasm to keep them. It is no surprise that there is a spike in DIY sales in the spring. We feel the need to improve our homes and we have the energy to make it happen.

If this happens to you, now is the time to plan. Collect fabric swatches, magazine pictures and paint samples so that when you start you know exactly the look you want.

Spring can also be a great inspiration. You can introduce the emotion and energy of this lovely season into your home with these easy spring decorating ideas.

Be inspired bythe colours of nature

Accent colours such as aqua blues, spring greens and sunny yellows against a neutral background can uplift any interior. Use pieces you already have around your home if you can. This is a great time to feature pillows, soft furnishings, light weight blankets and other decorations.

Bring the outdoors in

Bring a piece of outdoor furniture inside to blur the edges between the garden and your home. It also can add an interesting texture and shape.

Combine Pattern and Colour

Be inspired by Mother Nature and let pattern and colour do the talking. Look at the examples in nature that show how she combines them both and never gets it wrong.

Experiment With Paint

If you are nervous about introducing a radical change, be daring with paint. It is a job you can do yourself, it is inexpensive, and easy to correct if you don’t like it. Paint is one of the most frugal and yet most transformative spring decorating ideas!

Let The Sun Shine In

Introduce light by choosing designs that are clean, refreshing and light. Spring decorating ideas include sheer fabrics, linens and open weave textiles. Make the move from ceramic to crystal and glass. Also, take a look at how you light your home and consider new lamps or lampshades if your budget allows.

Dress Your Home With Flowers

Nothing’s says Spring more than fresh flowers. Visit your local florist to buy arrangements that are simple and vibrant or create some of your own. Use seasonal flowers or try using all the same type or colour of flower displayed in a glass container with a beautiful ribbon wrapped around it.

Decorate Your Table or Sideboard

This arrangement was created with fun tactile objects, faux figs and artichokes on a rectangular tray, all from Kiki & Bow, one of my favourite home decor shops.

De-Clutter To Create Space For Your Spring Decorating Ideas

Spring is the ideal time to ‘de-clutter’. Too many things can be distracting and are high maintenance. If you haven’t used or worn something in the last 12 months you probably do not need it, unless it is seriously sentimental. If you give it away or donate it you will feel better and someone else will benefit from your generosity. The act of de-cluttering can be very cathartic.

Decorate with Artwork and Paintings

Use paintings and artwork to bring neutral palettes to life or provide a focal point in a room. Feel free to move your artwork and paintings around, or rotate them seasonally if you have somewhere to store pieces that are not hanging up at the time.

This beautiful painting by Roberta Tetzner makes me smile every time I look at it. It hangs in my library all year round.
