Students sign a pledge to only speak Chinese in our language center and in all program-related activities. Rigorous admissions standards ensure that all enrolled students have the necessary language skills to learn Chinese in Chinese. Our comprehensive course placement evaluations places students in classes that suit their language learning needs. Students spend 4 to 6 hours daily preparing for the following day’s lessons, all of which are conducted in a “closed-book” classroom, in which students cannot refer to the textbook, notes, or dictionary.

Beyond the textbook
IUP’s goal is to teach the language skills necessary for students to deeply engage with Chinese academic and professional colleagues after graduation. All IUP courses challenge students to use the grammar and vocabulary in contexts outside of the topic of the day’s lesson text. Many IUP instructors hold special interest open classes outside of regular class hours including book clubs, poetry readings, documentary and film viewing, and tutorials on writing resumes and professional emails in Chinese.

"HOW GOOD WILL MY CHINESE BE AFTER STUDYING AT IUP ?"
This is a hard question to answer specifically, but the two most important factors when determining IUP is your language level when you enter IUP and how long you study in the program. Each 8-week module, generally includes, 160 hours of class time. Of which, on average, 120 hours are 3-on-1 and 40 hours are 1-on-1. Staying in the program longer, means a higher level when you leave. Most students who study for an academic year will do well on the HSK level 6 exam.

IUP was a perfect program for me as a career professional wanting to improve my Chinese. My classmates came from various backgrounds and experiences, yet all were serious students. The classes were small and each of my teachers invested in my learning. I was quite pleased with my progress and wish I had the opportunity to take courses each summer. There are courses on many interesting subjects. Because of my background in law, I picked up the criminal law and civil law texts at IUP and have continued to review them to stay sharp. Overall, the program exceeded my expectations.

I spent my time there doing everything from learning Chinese comedy routines to working with a teacher one-on-one to help me write a bilingual movie script. It was a fantastic environment for me to drill into the deep places of the interests I had in China and know that I had a supporting group of teachers to push me to learn, write, and create. Since I do Chinese performance, I need to be able to speak Chinese well enough that I can create my own works. In addition, it turns out to be really important to be able to "pitch" ideas in Chinese as well.
