How to Style a Teen Girl’s Bedroom

Welcome! I am excited to share 4 different mood boards that I created to inspire teen girls who are ready to transition from their childhood bedroom into a sophisticated space of their own.

Creating a chic bedroom that reflects a teenage girl’s individual personality is easier than you may think. By combining varied textures, colors, and other design elements, you can design a timeless, budget-friendly bedroom that any teen girl can enjoy throughout junior high school and well into her college years. The four mood boards illustrate different design styles. I have included links to each element for easy access, so you can customize your version of a dreamy teen retreat.

I hope this will give you the tools to help you pull together a timeless look for your teen girl. Check out my mood boards and blog for teen boy’s bedrooms, here.

Let’s get started!

Create a Focal Point

Every room needs a focal point. While many rooms have a built-in feature like a fireplace or two-story window that draws the eye into the room, in most bedrooms the bed serves as the focal point. Whether you choose a canopy bed, an upholstered headboard or even an in-laid wicker frame, the style of the bed as well as the layers of color, textures and accents in your bedding choices will set the tone of the overall room design.

Layer the Bedding

There are many bedding choices for customizing the look and feel for your room. When I am designing a bedroom, I use a combination of luxury sheets, airy duvets, matelassé coverlets, and jacquard blankets. Then, I add more layers with throws, shams, and accent pillows to create a custom bed design.

Layering bedding to create a dreamy spot is easy with the fail-safe formula that I use. First, I start with a set of high thread count sheets for a soft, luxury look and feel. Sheets come in a variety of colors, but many times I start with solid white sheets that can be bleached for a crisp look and fresh smell. Look for fitted sheets with deep pockets that fit snuggly and lie flat over the mattress to eliminate wrinkles and sags.

Designer tip: Face the top sheet right side down and fold one-third of the top sheet over the other layers of bedding to expose the decorative stitching.

Select a Color Palette

Choosing a color palette for any room can be tricky, but colors are the glue of the design. I recommend incorporating a limited pallet of complementary colors to create an integrated and cohesive design. Flooding the room with too many varied colors that vie for attention disrupts the flow and detracts from the overall aesthetic. Instead, use three to four complementary colors distributed in roughly a 60/30/10 ratio around the room.

Choose one main color to use in roughly 60% of the room, and choose a secondary color to use in approximately 30% of the room. The remaining 10% of the room can be filled with pops of accent colors. While this is not a steadfast rule, it is a good guide for balancing color and drawing your eye around the room.

Arrange the Room

Good room design requires more than just creating visual appeal. Function is an integral element in designing a sustainable, comfortable, and livable space. Choose multi-functional and size-appropriate furniture to complete your style. Each mood board contains links to the furniture I used in creating these designs.

Add Accessories

Adding accessories is an affordable way to express personality and add interest. When accessorizing, remember less is more. Rather than filling every blank space, choose well-scaled, quality accessories. Larger accessories can stand alone, while medium and smaller accessories create a greater visual impact when grouped together.

Light It Up

Many people understand the importance of layering elements of varied colors, patterns, and texture to create interest, but did you know that lighting is also a third-dimensional layer in design? While overhead lighting illuminates the space, the warm, inviting glow from well-placed lamps creates a cozy, welcoming radiance to the room. Don’t forget this important element in your design.

Remember the Floor

Don’t neglect the floor. There are many factors to consider when choosing a rug – color, pattern, size, shape, and texture. You can choose a rug that stands out or one that blends into the background. Neutral, solid-colored rugs can add a layer of texture while blending into the overall design. Eye-catching patterned rugs, on the other hand, boldly stand out in the design. Sometimes, I layer rugs by placing a large jute or other natural-fiber rug as my base and adding a smaller, patterned rug on top for a pop of color. The contrast of the two styles creates interest.

Consider Storage

Planning for adequate storage and organizational opportunities is vital for practical and aesthetic reasons. A room without ample storage solutions will eventually be overtaken by clutter. Luckily, there many creative and affordable storage hacks that don’t detract from a room’s design. Try textured baskets, trunks, shelving, decorative boxes, and under-bed storage.

Cream Upholstered Bed | Floral Pillow | Striped Pillow | Pink Pillow | Pink Duvet | White Sheet Set | Woven Rug | Desk | Table Lamp | Scallop Pinboard | Pink Desk Chair | Woven Basket | Pink Fringe Throw Blanket

For this teen girl’s bedroom option, I chose a soft, muted color pallet inspired by mossy blue/grays, dusty pinks and subtle gold hues.

The upholstered bed featured on this mood board is covered in an off-white textile that provides a perfect, neutral foundation in the first layer of this room’s design. This bed, available in twin, double, queen, king, and California King sizes, is one of my favorites to recommend to clients as a “save or splurge” item because it provides the look and feel of a high-end bed at a very affordable price! (I personally own one myself.) The textured fabric adds a layer of complexity and interest to any bedroom’s aesthetic and is the perfect backdrop for luxury bedding.

Textures and Colors

In designing this dreamy room, I paired layers of soft textures and gentle colors to create a simple and sophisticated look. The lightweight, dusty pink tone-on-tone, scallop duvet is perfect for creating a feminine, yet tailored look. Three layers of accent pillows unite the room’s design. The quiet colors and varied textures work well together to balance clean lines and soft accents throughout the room.

I love the way these reasonably priced pillow covers integrate subtle blue/gray, dusty pink and gold shades in a whimsical floral pattern with a hint of classical undertones. For the second layers of pillows, I paired warm, gray and beige, striped accent pillows as a sharp contrast to the floral print. Finally, a smaller, coordinating pillow completes the look.

In this mood board, I have selected a 42-inch white writing desk with spindle legs for a feminine touch. The desk can be used for homework or double as a make-up table, providing practical, affordable, and stylish function to the room. Paring the desk with Baylor chair in dusty pink is ideal for a teen girl’s décor and provides a plush, velvety fabric for maximum comfort.

The woven baskets in this mood board provide attractive storage for an extra throw on chilly evenings. Use one large basket or group three baskets of varying sizes together for more visual impact.

The core of this design is anchored with a handmade, beige rug that adds texture and warmth to the room.

Lamps are a key accessory for providing function and creating a welcoming ambiance. This fog gray lamp supports the underpinnings of all good design – color, texture, and scale.

Finally, inexpensive accessories like the bulletin board, decorative box, and the textured desk accessories support the refined room design fitting for any teen girl or young lady.

Solid Wood Bed | Linen Beige Pillow | Floral Teal Blue Pillow | Gray Striped Pillow | Light Fixture | Teal Area Rug | White Desk | Teal Desk Chair | Scallop Pinboard | Woven Table Lamp | Hanging Swing Chair | Teal Blue Pillow

Teen girls who prefer cleaner lines and less pink will find this Bohemian-inspired room a perfect blend of gray/blue shades and organic linens, coupled with natural wood tones and fanciful wicker touches.

Boho-Traditional Inspiration

The Antiqua solid wood bed offers a Scandinavian-inspired style with clean lines and a streamlined profile central in modern designs. Simple, lightweight, neutral-tone bedding provides a calming aesthetic while the traditional area rug available in a variety of sizes effectively introduces hues of blue and taupe in a distinguished design.

This pillow cover’s stylized floral pattern provides the perfect blend of pattern, texture, and color that harmonizes with the rug. Repeating the pillows in the wicker chair lends visual balance and contributes to the overall tranquility of the room.

A two-toned writing desk with drawers is a stylish organizational solution. The ergonomically designed task chair offers both comfort and functionality. Accessories like the bamboo task lamp, bulletin board and desk accessories complete the design of the room.

Think Up

Ceilings are a large part of a space and a great opportunity to add a layer of design. The wicker light fixture I chose for this room adds a touch of whimsy and integrates the warm, natural tones in the rug and accent pillows.

A hanging bamboo chair mirrors the texture of wicker ceiling light and introduces an unexpected contrast to the bed. Combining sleek contemporary lines with wicker accents generates authentic charm.

Canopy Bed | Pink and Sage Green Floral Wallpaper | Woven Light Fixture | Pink Pillow | Sage 3-Drawer Dresser | Table Lamp | Pom Pom Storage Basket | Rattan Hanging Swing Chair | Striped Pillow | Rust Floral Pillow

The third design option for a teen girl’s dream bedroom lends homage to the Romantic era with free-spirited elements, distressed finishes, organic textures, and mixed patterns.

Vintage-Modern

I love the focal point of this room – a canopy bed in a walnut finish. This bed delivers both visual drama and a streamlined design. Canopy beds, which were once a mainstay in bedroom décor, have recently regained favor among designers. This bed is an eye-catching element on its own, but I love it even more with the backdrop of the patterned wallpaper in tones of tea-stained peach and mossy green.

The three-drawer chest on this mood board replicates an 18th-century, French-inspired piece with classic ring pulls and delicate, fluted legs. The distressed finish draws out colors from the wallpaper. With the addition of refined elements, this eclectic layout creates an alluring contrast to the austere elements in the room.

The area rug adds a pop of color with alternating peach and cream stripes. This medium pile rug adds warmth and texture.

True to the simple, Boho style, the bedding on this mood board is minimal. The solid, subdued coverlet serves as an unassuming foundation for the splash of peach in the woven accent pillows. The smaller throw pillow is the perfect complement to the wallpaper and the finish on the French chest.

Cane Bed | Quinn Chandelier | Rust Floral Pillow | Blush Floral Pillow | Striped Pillow | Orange Floral Rug | Floral Artwork Prints | White and Gold Dresser | Blush Swivel Chair

Layers of texture are the key to this design starting with a fabulous, low-profile platform bed. The bed features a natural, light wood finish with inset cane panels that congers thoughts of a warm breeze blowing thorough Bahama shutters.

Modern-Vintage Canopy Bedroom

On this mood board, I intentionally avoided pairing pale or bright colors with this bed for two reasons – primarily to avoid creating a beach vibe and secondly to prevent a washed-out appearance. Instead, the warm marigold tones deliver the perfect portion of refinement to the room.

A large, wicker light fixture certainly adds a sense of drama. Repeating the cane detailing on both the bed and the light effectively unifies the room and adds a touch charm.

The flood of colors in this patterned rug serves to visually ground the room. Because most of the color in this space radiates from the floor, this rug is the perfect invitation into the room.

Three layers of accent pillows (floral pillow, terra-cotta pillow, and the striped farmhouse pillow) link the colors and overall style of the room, creating a polished, finished look.

The six-drawer dresserwith gold-toned metal legs is a perfect addition for maximum organization while blending nicely into overall aesthetic.
