In the 16 years years I've had a craft space, IKEA has been my go-to source for craft room furniture and storage solutions.

My husband and I have put together more than our fair share of IKEA furniture in the quest for the perfect craft space. A few years ago he was so exhausted from assembling IKEA furniture that he tried to tell me I was disallowed from shopping at IKEA. I just laughed and laughed and laughed.

We're still married. And he's still putting together IKEA furniture!

In the years since I originally wrote this post, I've made many mistakes buying craft room storage, wasting loads of money on the WRONG things. Or worse, I've arrived at IKEA to discover they no longer carried the solution I was looking for.

When I first bought a Billy bookcase almost 20 years ago, it was over $250! Now they're under $100 each, for the same exact bookcase.

Plan your exact space online before you buy anything in the store! There are several ways to use IKEA's free online planning tools but for craft rooms the most relevant tools are:

• Wall Storage Planner to plan a single wall
• 3D Room Planner to plan an entire room

How to use IKEA's wall storage planner:

1. Measure your space (wall height and width)
2. Go to IKEA's Planning Tools page
3. Choose the planner for the storage system you like most
4. Choose a room type to get ideas
   1. Choose one of the suggested combinations
   2. Or choose to “start from scratch”
5. Drag the sides of the wall planner to match the dimensions of your space using the measurements in step 1. Drag the corners diagonally to represent diagonal walls in your space.
6. Click the “NEXT” button to set the size of the wall system
7. Choose the items to add to your design. Watch the total cost accumulate on the lower right corner as you add or remove items.
8. Click “FINISH” to get the final plan.

How to use the IKEA design tool access code to view your shopping list:

• Pull up the IKEA.com site on your phone while you're in the store and enter the code
• Go to one of the kiosks in the IKEA store and enter the code

TIP: Click “buy online” to automatically add the items for your design to the shopping cart. You can then screenshot the cart with the list of items you need or copy and paste them into a notes tool, like Evernote, to access it from your phone in store.

How to use IKEA's 3D room planner:

1. Measure your space (length, height, and width of the room)
2. Go to IKEA's Planning Tools page
3. Choose the room type
4. Choose to “create new design” and enter your room dimensions
5. Add IKEA furniture and accessories to the design:
   • Choose from the drop down menus on the left column
   • Or use the search bar on the top of the left column to find items to add to your room design
6. Click “add” to add the items to the design. Drag or use the controls to move and rotate the items to place them where you'd like within the room
7. Finish designing your room, using the view buttons to see a 3D representation of the design in your space
8. Click on “item list/title price” to see the full shopping list and cost. Print the list and take it with you to IKEA.

• Facebook Marketplace – look for local people in your area selling their used IKEA furniture

• Local thrift shops
• Garage sales and yard sales.

I sold one of my Expedit bookcases to a lady who drove over an hour to my house to get it because she lives 3 hours from the nearest IKEA. She found my yard sale through a Facebook group!

How to SAVE MONEY the next time you go to IKEA

The FIRST Place You MUST Go in IKEA for the Best Deals

My first stop every time I go to IKEA is the As-Is section. The As-Is section includes:

• Store samples
• Returns of assembled furniture
• Discontinued items
• Store shelving and displays that IKEA doesn't make or offer for sale
• Damaged items
• Pieces of furniture

IKEA marks down all these items and gathers them in one handy corner of the store: the As-Is section.

Here's why the As-Is section is my first stop every time I go to IKEA:

• Assembled furniture.Pick up furniture that's already put together and ready to go in your craft space.
• Store displays. Want a HUGE table or a countertop? Get store displays that aren't usually sold in IKEA, for rock bottom prices.
• Huge markdowns. Save money buying floor samples, damaged items, discontinued items, or returns. You can often find the same items from the current IKEA catalog and showroom, but for up to 90% off!
• Discover new solutions. Find what the exact item you want (or an alternative solution) at an amazing price, without having to walk through the entire showroom.

I've scored many of the storage solutions in my craft room from As-Is.

This craft table is from IKEA's As-Is section. It's perfect for making small craft projects and scrapbook pages. And no one would even know it cost 60% less than the same table from the IKEA show room. Oh, that rug is also from the As-Is section!

Here's what you need to know about shopping IKEA's As-Is section:

• Most items are already assembled
• You can ask for tools at the return counter to help you take apart anything in the As-Is section so it will fit in your vehicle
• Some of the items are damaged or missing pieces. Since you're mega crafty, you can probably figure out a quick and easy fix.
• If the missing pieces are significant, ask the staff if they have any additional pieces in the back. Sometimes you can hack together a fix or even get the part you need for free.
• If the finish is damaged on the item, spray paint it!
• Come early. They put out the best stuff in the morning and by the afternoon it's usually picked over
• Start your shopping trip at As-Is. Then if you don't find anything that fits the bill, go up to the showroom and start shopping.

If you have a truck, the As-Is section can be your best friend for major deals at IKEA.

No truck? The returns desk will let you borrow tools to take your As-Is purchase apart. We went to IKEA for a bed for my college-age daughter's room and found the exact one we wanted in As-Is. It took about 30 minutes to get it apart but we did it with the tools from the returns section.

How to get to the IKEA As-Is Section

The As-Is Section is strategically placed at the end of the shopping route through IKEA. They want you to buy all the things in the showroom BEFORE you get to the As-Is section.

Here's the secret: By-pass the showroom and get straight to As-Is.

1. Locate the checkstands
2. Enter the warehouse area through one of the open checkstands
3. Directly to the right or left of the checkstands is a big red sign indicating discounts or “As-Is”. That's where the deals are!

A Warning Before you shop in As-Is

Before you buy, beware that you cannot return As-Is items. I recently bought some plastic bins to use to organize my craft supply drawers. But when I got home, they didn't fit. At $0.50 each, I just donated them to a thrift shop.

Here are some As-Is shopping tips:

• Measure the space or drawers before you shop so you know if things will fit
• Have another use in mind so the whole purchase is not wasted if things don't work out once you get home

If you have ever wished you could craft with your friends, you've gonna love this IKEA craft room idea from My Blue Bike 101.

Back in the day when we had local scrapbook stores, I remember gathering there every Friday night and sometimes on weekends for craft nights. And when I was a kid, I remember my grandma heading to the sewing machine store to take classes and meet other avid sewing fans.

But today, many of the local craft and scrapbook stores have closed and there's no place to gather and craft together. That is, unless you build a craft room for crafting with friends in your house!

The dream of a craft room for friends is super easy to build with IKEA'sinexpensive tables.

How to make a giant cutting table with IKEA tables … that doubles as a space to craft with friends

My Blue Bike put together two glass top IKEA tables to make one gigantic craft table! A big table top like this is perfect for:

• sewing projects since it gives you a large solid space to spread out fabric and patterns to cut them out with precision.

5. BEST Stamp and Paint Storage Ideas

The easiest way to use your stamps and paints is to have them out in the open, where you can see them.

This room happens to be my craft room!

I arranged my paint bottles and rubber stamps onthin IKEA shelves for picture frames, called picture ledges, mounted on the walls of my craft space. These shelves are just deep enough for:

• Stamp blocks
• Bottles of craft paint
• Spray paint cans
• Rolls of ribbon
• Any other small items you want to arrange by type or color

The shallow shelves make it easy to see what you have and then select what you need for a project. I put the most used items on the bottom so I can grab them easily. Less frequently used items are on the top shelves. I can still see them so I won't forget about them but I need a step stool to reach them the one to two times a year I want to use them.

How to Organize your Raskog cart

You'll need these accessories to help organize the contents of the cart and create even more storage space:

• Hooks: use these to hang Cricut mats, plexi grid rulers, and more from the side of your Raskog
• S hooks: IKEA actually sells these under the SUNNERSTA line but you can also use S hooks like these from the hardware store
• Cups: SUNNERSTA containers are plastic cups with a lip that hooks over the side of the Raskog cart
• Shelves: SUNNERSTA shelves can be hooked to the side of the Raskog for additional storage, like a tray.
• Baskets:The OMAR clip on basket hooks onto the long sides of the Raskog cart to create storage off the side
• Dividers
  • Metal cans: SOCKER plant pots are great for holding paint brushes and scissors in the top tier of the Raskog
  • Jars: Ball jars or IKEA 365+ jars can be used to hold small items
  • Trays: IKEA has lots of divided trays you can use in the top of the Raskog. Just be sure to measure before buying
• Magnetic canisters with lids:magnetic spice canisters are great for organizing small supplies and can be attached to the Raskog's sides

5 ways to use a Raskog cart in your craft room

• Use the keyboard tray as a slide out work surface
• Add shelves inside for more storage
• Use bins and boxes in the bottom section for storing larger items
• Close the doors when you're not working to hide the mess inside

Score marked down, slightly damaged pieces that are already assembled in the IKEA As-Is. The inside of this armoire is covered with paper that the owner decoupaged onto the wood. If the furniture is damaged and mark down, cover up the scuffs with some pretty paper and decoupage medium, like Mod Podge.

As of January 2019, IKEA doesn't have an armoire like this in their catalog or online. But I gathered some similar ideas for you here:

The focal point of her space is the large cube bookcase against the back wall of the room. The IKEA Expedit Unit she used is no longer available. A couple years ago IKEA released a new version of this shelving series called KALLAX, with all new accessories and colors.
