A Cross-Cultural Study of Some Selected Arabic Proverbs and Their English Translation Equivalents: A Contrastive Approach

The main aim of this study is to examine some common proverbs in Arabic and their English counterparts to shed light on significant socio-cultural differences. The choice of sample proverbs is based upon thematic classification. Proverbs are words combined together to form larger semantic units which are encoded by the speaker and decoded by the hearer by means of their underlined knowledge of the language itself. Proverbs, as metaphoric expressions or as cultural discourse, are codified on semantic structures. Thereby, Proverbs are figural and signifying acts of meaning that mediate interpretation and negotiate pragmatic signification at linguistic, philosophical and cultural levels. While proverbs make up and reflect the cultural identity of a specific society, and despite the uniqueness of languages and the profound differences between cultures, there are proverbs that shed light on universal truths of human life, common traditions and beliefs. Such proverbs have bridged linguistic and cultural barriers throughout human history.

Comparative Study of Culture in Kurdish and Farsi Proverbs

Proverbs are considered as part of folklore or public literature and one of important cultural treasures. Hence, discussing and studying proverbs can make us familiar with cultural aspects, value and norms of the owners of those proverbs. In this study Kurdish and Farsi proverbs are investigated based on cultural components and its species are presented and classified based on the same components. The present study shows that Kurdish and Farsi proverbs have spoken of two categories of values and norms, and anti-values and abnormalities, first, positive values and norms such as encouraging to truthfulness, effort, patience and tolerance, pragmatic, wise, etc; and second, negative values and in other words anti-values and abnormal action that they have been blame such as lying, avarice, cruelty, etc; also based on Malinowski’s theory, the three individual, social and combined functions are conceivable Keywords: Culture, Value, Norm, Anti-Value, Kurdish proverbs, Farsi proverbs, etc.

Proverbs in the Arabic Language Classroom

This paper investigates how exposure to proverbs in the Arabic language classroom transforms students’ perceptions and values they hold dear regarding cultural diversity and facilitates new understanding and insights into the foreign cultural concepts and their own thus enhancing their intercultural competence. Two questions were asked: 1. To what extent the use of proverbs in the Arabic language classroom shed lighton cultural aspects not regularly covered in the Arabic language classroom? 2. To what extent the use of proverbs in the Arabic language classroom promote a new understanding of the Arab culture among students and make them discover and reassess their own values and preferences? The philosophic significance or relevance of proverbs as a paradigm for social engineering and reconstruction in traditional Africa have yet to be alluded the requisite attention. Proverbs do not only serve as a dais, the existence of an authentic African thought system prior contact with Western minds, but it also a phenomenon, pregnant with moral and pedagogic inputs for relevance. The present African society is one that displays the intellectual gulf between private and public morality where upbringing with proper moral guidance has been given less emphasis. The primary agenda of this inquiry is to unclad the relevance and pragmatic of proverbs in a bid to accelerate human development which is rapidly declining on the continent.

Language is not only a vehicle of individual thought but of collective thought. One of the ways it performs the latter function is by the use of proverbs which carry the burden of a peoples’ beliefs, customs and traditions. As communicative medium therefore, proverbs seem to be iconic and indexical of the cultures that birth them. In this paper, this assertion was investigated through the exploration of the proverbs of four Nigerian cultures to see to what extent proverbs serve to identify and define their users.
