I really enjoyed this seminar- so very many timely observations. Thanks to IPANZ, VUW, Karl, Geoff, Annika and Richard for organising/presenting. And to Michael Macaulay's point, it was an excellent demonstration of the strong connections between academia and practitioners that endure through changes of government and economic cycles.

A final post on last week's Public Sector Strategy Network Annual Strategic Foresight Retreat that includes my summary of thoughts on the week. Key takeaways include:-trust is built by delivering on promises-people don't care who delivers service, just that they are delivered and delivered well-government shifting to be a facilitator and ecosystem builder-we in the north need to pay more attention to the global south-global networks are key to facilitating the sharing of knowledge and best practiceApoliticalApolitical FoundationSalzburg Global Seminar#sgs#sgsgov#AltonsAlpineAdventureps: apologies about the camera work... lessons for next time

Robust governance in turbulent times: successful panels at IRSPM😁Rising societal turbulence forces public decisionmakers to adapt and innovate public governance to uphold core public goals, values and functions. This insight is intensely discussed in a stream of agenda-setting panels at the IRSPM conference in Tampere. The stream is organized by the EU Horizon ROBUST project. In the first panel, we had to bring in 10 extra chairs into an already packed seminar room to accommodate demand. It was like a Finish sauna, but the intellectual excitement about the new ideas was huge. Thanks for all for your presentations and interventions so far...ROBUST - Crisis Governance in Turbulent TimesIRSPM

In the third and final part of our recently re-launched Pitch, we considered what it would look like if DFAT made a conscious choice to prioritise the pursuit of development impact. When I got my first program to manage in AusAID - a messy, complex, rather unloved program that had as many diplomatic objectives as it did developmental - I had no idea what I was doing. I focused on the stuff that seemed essential - managing the money and reporting - but I'm sure that I didn't contribute much at all to the overall effectiveness or impact of the program (but hey, we can always chalk that up to being the design's fault, right?). But I learned, mostly from the experienced development practitioners around me, and made mistakes, probably made some implementing partners want to tear their hair out (sorry about that!) and by the time I was managing my second and third and fourth program, I like to think I was a little better at knowing what mattered, and what I didn't need to sweat over. Today, program managers in DFAT are dealing with more complexity, less strategic clarity, and have less of that expertise surrounding and supporting them. So in this Pitch, we suggest a few ideas that could help DFAT - both at the institutional and individual level - to re-orient their management choices, let go, and let great things happen.
