THE SPRINGIELD SUNDAY UNION AND REPUBLICAN SPRINGIELD MASS: APRIL 23 1939 RYLL GETS SECOND CHANCE AGAINST BILL BOYD TOMORROW AT VALLEY ARENA 'i Bill Boyd and Ryll In eature at Holyoke Southwick Boy Gets Chance Tomorrow to Avenge Kayo at Hands of Jack Protege Two Six Rounders on Valley Arena Card Holyoke April 22 One of the best heavyweight matches to be un folded the Holyoke Valley arean ring in several years is scheduled for Monday night when Wild Bill Boyd of Tacoma Wash protege of Jack Dempsey former heavyweight champion of the world throws gloves at Al Ryll product of a Southwick farm in the main bout of 10 rounds Boyd and Ryll will be rheeting for the second time the first session end ing in a knockout for Boyd in a Baltimore (Md) ring No question about it this Boyd is the toughest oppo nent ever handded by Ryll in' tips neck of the woods and in other parts of the country for that matter Lot to Boyd Ryll was going along his way pretty peacefully looking the part of a great' prospect until he bumped intoBoyd out in Maryland That was his finish so far as the records are con cerned but his manager Lou Brown who never is at a loss for words have been howling to the high heavens ever since Brown will tell you that it was a synthetic knockout scored by Boydin Baltimore He admits that Ryll was on the canvas a spot where any heavyweight is liable to land but he does not admit that Ryll was not in a position to continue Brown will say that Ryll was on his feet ready to continue throwing punches at Boyd when the referee dropped into a brain storm of some kind or other and waved Boyd as the winner Hearing that tale of woe as ex pounded by Brown and wanting a match that would have Ryll in the spot of a fighjer who has a chance of being knocked out Pioinoter Homer Rainauit began to work on a second meeting between Boyd and Ryll and landed it after dickering for several days with Dempsey Rain auit believes he has a match that will appeal to the fans of Western Draw at Bolton As Last Chance ades Out With high water on the Connecticut river during the last week the var sity crew of American International college has had to forego its usual practice but Coach Jim Nesworthy Is hopeful that the river will have sub sided by tomorrow and that daily drill again can be held The crew schedule lists a race with Williams on Lake Pontoosuc in Pittsfield Sat urday but word received by Neo worthy is that the competition cannot be staged that day He is erideavor to arrange another date Dartmouth Here May 6 The eight's first home appearance is scheduled for a week from Sat urday May 6 against Dartmouth col lege over the Henley distance on the course that terminates at the North end bridge In two races last year Dartmouth and A broke even so that this meeting will be the rubber Since returning to the campus here from the southern trip of the Aces Nesworthy is loud in his praise of the manner in which the A I oarsmen were treated at Rollins col lege in lorida where they met Rollins and Washington and Lee The Aces also were invited back next year The crewmen brought back a somewhat different story of the race with the University of Richmond than that which preceded them They said A I lost that race by a half a length rather than two lengths and they have a picture from a Richmond newspaper to prove it They also corrected the report that the Richmond stroke broke his oar on the 11th beat and was carried as a passenger He merely chipped the blade of his oar and he continued to use it throughout the race Al though the A I oarsmen were not complaining about it it also was learned that Richmond had only two shells one a trim racing boat end the other a training shell of much greater weight The Aces used the latter Earlier this year the Backstop Provides Berry With Worries I r'J By GEOKGE SPRINGER Classical hijih baseball team defending city champions and semifinalists last year in the Western Massachusetts baseball tourna ment will launch out upon a new season Thursday afternoon at orest park when Ludlow High will be met in a game at 315 But missing from the club will be that ace pitcher Jimmy Wilson the lad who was given all the acclaim last year as having pitched his team to the first major championship the Lower State street institution had gained in quite a few years Robert Gleason pitcher will also be missins Thursday as will le Joo Richards outfielder who though still in school is average Appears despite these few losses and the importance of the absence ofWilson there are encouraging moments for Coach Robert Berry at Classical Ha can field an inner cordon of veterans can probably depend upongetting good pitching from Clifton Seat er and field a trio of outfielders who should go to make the Bulldogs a serious contender for the honors they won in 1938 But a big 'if on the club practically the same one that gave Berry many sleepless nights a year ago That is the catching department In desperation last spring Berry final ly inserted Seaver then a third string pitcher back of the plate and Clif unproved with each game and by the end of the season was holding his own with the best of the catchers in this section Clif is needed on the mound how ever this spring and be no Seaver back nt the plate In a time this lad has shown plenty of additional stuff on the ball He hurled the Adams Aces to the 11 to 16 Sand lot league championship a year ag and in practices thus far this year has shown every reason to make his coach believe that he will be able fog the ball by a lot of high school batters And Seaver should be given some help on the mound If William Gran tield settles down to serious business he should be a good hurler on the staff Granfield son ot the local judge who himself was consid eredone of the best high school play ers in his time is a left hander He has good control and though stiff in his motions should overcome this as the weather gets warmer and he gains more knowledge by experience Art Young a mere youngster and an other lad who hurled a team to a sandlot championship last summer is another possibility though it may be a year too early for Art to start cracking the schoolboy headlines Catching Worries the catching post again that is worrying the Classical mentor Rob ert Bush hopes to relieve his mentor of some of this fearfulness and to veteran include Leary at first a big rangy kid reddy Zanetti second ar short and DeGroat third sacker The latter is the son of the Springfield college coach and has shown ability at the hot coiner But Welch has fielded well in the past his hitting not being up to what might be ex pected of a husky like Howie How ever Welch hopes to improve on his batting average this year Zanetti ind There any number of outfield candidates available Edward Hurley who hit 267 last year is available an 1 may be shifted to left field Harry Lehmann who did quite a bit of gar dening a year ago is a possibility provided he make good as the catcher and shows an inclina tion to hit Janies Boland substitute a year ago has shown up well in prac tice sessions and then there are new comers Joe Shea and Richard Zanetti The last named is likely to gain a tegular oerth for he has been hitting hard in practice and in the tilt against Wilbraham tagged the academy pitch ers for a single and triple Shea is a good fielder but still a question mark in the hitting column Of ursc Sea ver can bo used in the outfield when not pitching for Cliff is one of the Itetter hitteis on the club finishing up with a 29S average last year which was quite a bit above his mark of 252 All in all Classical should really be a threat for the city crown It should be strong on the defensive side of the ledger and up with the best of the teams on the offense Its question marks are the catching and whether Seaver can really pitch to schoolboys ns he did to sandlotters and whether he will receive any help at all in this department from Granfield or
